Ten Ways to Add Farmhouse Style to Your Suburban Home
9) Farmhouse Furniture:

Collecting Farmhouse-style Furniture may sound very daunting. Few of
us have the budget to just go out and buy vintage cabinets, chests and
linen-colored chairs. But, with the rebirth of chalk paints and milk paints,
creating your own Farmhouse-style furniture from thrift store finds is
now possible. One of the pioneers of painting furniture with milk paint

In fact, she became so prolific at the art of painting furniture – that she
developed and started marketing her own line of milk paints.

While I condone painting priceless family heirlooms, if you
have some items of furniture you do not really care for, or have an item
that needs an instant update – try your hand at milk paint or chalk paint.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is also a great source.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is also a great source.

View CommentGreat post! Thanks so much for also sharing your tidbit about the farmhouse sink! I have long admired the copper ones, but didn’t think about the care require…even though for years we had those pots with copper at the bottom and I remember using “Twinkle” every time they were washed to make the copper shine!

Super article, and thanks for the chance at the giftcard!
View CommentWow! I could buy my man some new tools with the gift card! I wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading your post about Farmhouse Decor, and I hope your event at The Hen House goes well! Wish I lived closer so I could attend!
View CommentGreat list, and a lot of them apply to cottage as well.
I love my copper sink; I guess I like imperfection from oxidation, but I think it looks beautiful, and it will last a lifetime. My dad was a plumber and he was always making me something from copper.
After seven years in my former home, my gorgeous Kohler was no longer gorgeous; regular sinks only last so long. At least copper is recyclable, and one should be able to get something for it as scrap metal.
View CommentI just came across your blog by accident and signed up to get your emails. This is all just too cute. So much to see, read and be inspired.
View Commentnot sure what i would get with the Father’s Day card…my list to Home Depot is really long.I need to replace some tools and get my garage organized…finally!
View CommentI’d love to win this give away for my husband…he’d like a new sanding tool.

I might be one of the rare ones that actually lives in a 100 year old farmhouse. However, I’ve been here 3 years and haven’t decorated a bit! I’m overwhelmed! I’m slowly getting a few pieces and looking at blogs to get ideas. I love ALL your stuff here and actually have several of the pieces that are in your hutches, etc. Paint scares the heck out of me! I’ve took the plunge and picked a color for 2 rooms and after a week of painting, etc, I don’t like the color! I have the hardest time with color.
View CommentI actually do live in a 100 year old farmhouse. However, I am totally overwhelmed with decorating. We bought the house 3.5 years ago and I haven’t done much. With help from fabulous blogs like yours I’m at least getting ideas and a game plan! I love your pictures and I actually have a few of the platters / pitchers/ etc that you have shown in your hutches and vignettes.
View CommentWonderful ideas! I love the mantles. Imagine my surprise when my 19yo went out picking for the first time and came home with three fireplace mantles! What a score! They’re sitting in the shop, looking all pretty, & I’m going to be sad when they finally go to their new homes.
View CommentYour post was thoughtful and inspiring! Thank you!
View CommentYour wonderful emails brighten my day and put some creativity into my life. Thanks for all you do! -Beth
View CommentI absolutely love the farmhouse look, although I currently incorporate very little of it in my own home. It is such a homey, carefree,& casual way to decorate. Maybe I should re-think one of the bedrooms…….. Great post incorporating all of these ideas, Barb! 🙂 Sue
View CommentOh how I would love to win so I could purchase a new staple gun! Love you page…always. But the farm house look is my favorite! So many ideas. Good luck at your show. I know you’ll do well. If I can get away I’ll take a drive.
View CommentGreat post! I am in love with that mantel!!

I am thrilled with this post! I have all those things going on in my home. Glad to know I am on the right track. Love your blog!
View CommentI love farmhouse style! I opted not to go with a farmhouse sink (which I love) because a few neighbors had them and said water dripped all over the lower cupboard and warped the wood. I’ve never heard this before but ended up going with stainless steel. I also have a granite countertop that I love. Wood wouldn’t work well in my kitchen but I sure do love the look!
View CommentVintage show mentioned in comments……where and when and how often held.

I love your hammered copper sink and I would be interested to know what the upkeep is on one of those? I just think it looks stunning but if it is a lot of work I would understand wanting to change it out.
View CommentHi Gilly – I have to be honest with you, I replaced it with a white, ceramic Farmhouse sink from IKEA because it was getting impossible to upkeep. I just felt I wanted something clean and white, plus I had just painted my cabinets white, too. I loved it while it was new, though. It gave me several beautiful years. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! ~Barb
View Comment{Swoon} over your counter tops and !!Backsplash!! I adore the color of the brick! This is a great post!

Great points – I could have a farmhouse but they are so much work to keep up around here, most are not updated and are of the most original farmhouse authenticity 🙂 Thanks for sharing, I’d kill for a farmhouse sink!!!!
View CommentI love farmhouse kitchens and your post reinforced that for me!
View CommentEilis@The QuaintNest
I’m definitely like you, since I often find myself having exactly that same thought. But no-one obliges ad I always have to return to my city flat. Wish I lived in the countryside. Maybe some day…
View CommentYeah definitely could not have open shelves. I’m too messy…
I love your Kitchen. My dream is to one day own an Apron Sink and it will come true! Even if I live in the City of London 😛
Thanks for sharing xx Dandy http://www.dandelionblue.co.uk/
Awesome poste Barb! Hugs from France. Monika
View CommentThanks for stopping by, Monika. We’ll hopefully be in France this time next year for a visit. Take care!
View CommentLet me know next year, maybe we can meet. Hugs.
View CommentI love the farmhouse style even though I live in the city. I love your 10 steps to making your house a farm style house. Your post will be featured on my blog this Thursday on Idea Box!! Thank you for sharing.
View CommentI know this an old post, but it should be resurrected once a month—for its timeless style. Clearly you have a handle on Farm Style and good clean, nonsensical living! We tested an IKEA butcher block counter on our Island and will be installing everywhere, when we replace our cabinets. So far we have oiled it three times…and it has a few stains, but like you stated, it only enhances the look of the cabinet. Not too mention cutting down on the noise and breakage, as I am a klutz.
Thanks for the wonderful post, and I would considering doing this one now and again, and again, and again.
View CommentSandi – we are also eyeing the IKEA Butcherblock counntertops and I love that you have given them such a good review. Did you see my review for my new IKEA Farmhouse Sink. If not, you can do a search. I LOVE it. 🙂
View CommentGood luck with your countertops and come back and tell me when they are in. I would love to see them, too. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. ~Barb
Thank you for the inspirations. I do have a farmhouse – built 1900 – 1905; town has built up around it. But it is a mess, not farmhouse like, except the upstairs bathroom which I gutted and remodeled with the 1926 claw foot tub – which I had the porcelain replaced. I will be using some of your ideas when we tackle our kitchen and living room. I wish I had your help with our very strange master bedroom.
View CommentLove these photos especially the first image of the farmhouse in the country. That is my dream home! We love in a subdivision. I love my house but it is too contemporary and it does not have the country setting I yearn for. I do incorporate country farmhouse style into my home to make it feel warm and cozy. Maybe someday I will find my dream farmhouse in the country!
View CommentLove your farmhouse ideas.. and your whole blog. I’m just startng a blog and getting lots of inspiration from yours. Oh, and I’m just up the road from you in NC.
View CommentTruly inspirational ideas!! I too love the farmhouse feel and look! Going to give this old house of mine a real flip that makes ME happy ! I have collected lots of little things but it will be the actual changes to walls, floors, countertops and of course the requisite paint and trim that will give this place the character it is in dire need of…NO MORE ORANGE WOOD !!! LOL. But on a side note, that shower curtain is dreamy…but too steep for my budget, gotta put it on the dying list.?
View CommentHi Cindy – you have to decorate your home in a way that makes you happy. I steered off course a few years back and came back to the style that makes us happy. Hope you find your “happy” too. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. ~Barb
