Flow.
It really is a simple word isn’t it.
The flow of the stream. Your hair flows in the wind. You spilled some milk on the “flow.” 😀
*(the last joke courtesy of southern slang)
In my case… I will use the word flow in reference to “going with the flow.“
You see, our Laundry Room/Pantry remodel is complete accept for a few touch-ups here and there. I am caulked/painted/nailed out.
Plumb, tee-total out.
As out as a DIY’er can be out’ed. Yes, that out.
Well, ok not completely out. I still have a project planned for this wall to cover up that ugly panel box.
Why, oh why, do builders have to put these in the most obvious of places? Would another, more hidden wall have KILLED him?
This shelf project was the final construction project which we completed this weekend. In fact, if you look at these pics close enough, you will probably still see some wet paint and areas that need those “touch ups.”
So – what do shelves which hold baskets and panel boxes that are ugly have to do with flow?
Simple. I took step-by-step pictures on how we created this 10′ shelf for less than $50, from beginning to end.
But, unfortunately – when I went to download all of these step-by-step “oh-that-is-oh-so-clever” pictures… my memory stick was empty!
Empty. As in empty as an Easter Basket on Monday morning.
And the worst part is that I had some cute-as-pie pics of my Grandloves during this weekend’s photo shoot.
Good thing the photographer gave me a sneak-peak…
{sorry I just couldn’t resist}
🙂
So…I had no other choice but to show you my
10′ shelf-for-less-than-$50 demo using only the afters. It’s called FLOW. Going with the flow.
Just call me Gumby. 😀
So, let’s get started on this easy tutorial shall we?
Or….I could post some more cute pics of my babies?
Okay, okay…the shelf. Flow. Stay with the flow.
Okay, okay…the shelf. Flow. Stay with the flow.
Meet the {Fake} Expensive Components of My {Cheap} Shelf:
1) I found these at HD. We decided that a 10′ shelf would be best with four brackets.
2) We purchased an inexpensive white pine board. We could have purchased a primed one or laminated one but my DIY genes would not allow me to spend that much. {think cheap}
3) More {cheap} pine wood, this one 6″ wide. This board will cover up any space there may be between the top shelf and the brackets. We placed these between the brackets.
4) Quarter round. Are you kidding me? I am thinking this item needs to be added to “duct tape” and “WD-40.” This stuff can be used for everything. Including {fake} shelves.
5) I needed a 1″ moulding to fill in the space between the bottom of the 6″ board and the bottom of the bracket. The fact that it was {cheap} had nothing to do with why I chose it. 🙂
So that’s it. Some caulk. Some primer. Some paint. And some smooches to my sweet Hubbs for helping me get it done while I went to the Easter photoshoot.
And speaking of cheap… don’t you love these linen baskets I found at Kmart? This large one was about $7.
These smaller ones were only about $5 each. Love that. The cute chalkboard tags are from
So that’s it. My amazing DIY shelf. I know I could never have purchased a 10′ shelf for this same dollar amount. And there is something about taking a few miscellaneous pieces of wood, some random mouldings, and creating something which looks so much more expensive than it really is.
When I stood back and saw the completed product, I was “flowed.”
{sorry could not help myself} 🙂
This post is sponsored by the numbers 9, 10, 11, and 12.
🙂
🙂
These rusty tin numbers are from my online shop, Farmhouse Decor, and I am sorry to say they are all sold out. (I know….booooo!)
I have begged…. no, literally begged my vendor to bring them back again. Let’s hope my pitiful, mercilessly begging helped. I also threatened to fill his email account with pictures of my cute grandbabies if he didn’t comply with my wishes. {and I might throw in some family vacation shots, too} Yes, I am that evil. 🙂
For the record, if you are wondering how we also {faked} the inexpensive-looking trim above the beadboard, you can read that HERE.
I will be revealing the remainder of my {cheap} inexpensive projects later this week. As soon as I figure out why my {NOT CHEAP} camera did not take any pics on my memory card. (grrrrr)

Awesome job! I love a great DIY project. This looks easy too…and we all need more shelves to store things. Keep it up…after a much needed break of course!

Great shelf, I love how it blends in and is handy yet out of the way. The extra touches of moulding and details totally make it look like expensive carpentry. Super idea! So sorry about your photos 🙁

That looks great, Barb! Love the brackets and I love how you have that piece of wood/molding under the shelf. If that shelf had been put up with out it, it would have have looked pretty plain and blah. It really gives a nice look! Great pictures of the kiddies. Love the one of your granddaughter in the basket ~ it looks like a nest.
