I wonder if people who do not live in the South get really tired of everyone who does live in the South….talking about the South?
I wonder if they get tired of us talking about our Southern farmhouses and our Southern porches.
I have traveled all over the World, and I know without a doubt there are truly beautiful areas which rival my beloved South.
But, I am deep down a true-blue Southerner. Born and Bred in North Carolina.
Right in the heart of Tobacco Country. And Cotton Country.
You see, Texans have Cattle. Californians have wine. Wisconsin has cheese.
But, here in the South – we have Cotton.
Yes, yes, I think we all know what the major use of cotton is? Don’t we?
We decorate with it, of course. 🙂
We stick long stems in pretty willow and glass vases and add some fresh cut grape vine.
Then, we place it on our coffee tables in our Living Rooms….
and add…
Pretty pillows from Pottery Barn with a pheasant surrounded by Fall finery.
Cotton….
It’s not just for underwear anymore? 🙂
And you know what? I have some extra cotton to giveaway. Yep, it’s a another Cotton Pickin’ Giveaway. 🙂
All you have to do is leave a comment and let me know if you are already an Everyday Home friend, and if you’re not – then please sign up as a Google Friend or follow me via email.
That’s it. If you win – a beautiful box of the South will be on its way to your home.
*(sorry, lower 48 states only, please)
If you want, you can even put this button on your sidebar. We’ll call it extra credit. Make sure you tell me in a separate comment if you do. 🙂
Winner will be announced next Friday. So let’s get jumpin’….there’s some Cotton to be won!
xxoo

I am a Southerner sort of…..I was born and raised in Kentucky and we had tobacco as well. I now live in South Carolina for 8 years now.
View CommentThe true Southern people think the Yankee s have ruined their state. Remember I live in Myrtle Beach and we get a lot of the snowbirds and the retirees. Its funny because the northerners say that Southern people can not drive, the Southern people say the Northern people can not drive.
I love the South! If I had my choice I would live in Alabama in a small town on a plantation. Your southern touches are beautiful!

I was born in Pennsylvania but lived most of my life in the South and raised my children in the Tidewater area of Virginia. I am now back in Pennsylvania and miss my southern life. I miss cotton fields filled with white bolls just before they are picked. I miss fresh, fried okra. I miss sweet tea. I miss hot white beaches and warm, balmy nights. I would love a bit of South in my house ’cause as strange as it might seem, I don’t think I have anything here that could be defined as “southern” except my accent! (I follow your blog through Google Friend!)

I would love some cotton! I know where there are fields and fields of it, but have no idea where to buy it. A roadside stand somewhere? That would be a great idea! I will open a watermelon roadside stand and when the watermelons are out of season, I will sell bunches of cotton! Genius!

This is so funny!!! I was just talking to Shirley at Southern Housepatality earlier today about wanting some authentic cotton!!! Living here in the Kansas City, MO area doesn’t allow us much opportunity for such luxuries. We have corn and soy and wheat out of the ying-yang, but not a puff of cotton! (At lest not in the northeastern part of Missouri.) I have visited the South and wanted to pluck some, but didn’t want to just saunter up to someone’s field and start whackin’ away at it. I’m pretty sure that would have bought me either a pair of tight silver bracelets or a behind full of buckshot! At any rate, I just rode past and wished. I would like to just hop out and be able to pull some of it myself for the experience! If I win some cotton on the stick, though, that would be cool, too. 🙂 And, yes, we “Northerners” get all pouty because we don’t have all the cool stuff you guys have there like year-round temperate weather, cool accents, houses with wrap around porches (there are surprisingly very few around here!), houses completely made of brick (many just have a brick facade on the front), sugar cane, and…cotton! 🙂

Hi Barb,
View CommentI check your website everyday. I love seeing what you are up to and what new decorating you might be doing in your lovely home. I was born in Florida in 1956 and grew up there until I was sixteen. I have lived in Wyoming the last 27 years. I still miss the south in my heart, I guess that feeling will always be there. My maternal Grandparents lived in North Carolina so I remember the cotton and tobacco fields from when I was a little girl. I guess that old say’in is true, you can take the girl out of the south but you can’t take the south out of the girl. I hope that you are feeling better health wise. Take care

I’m a follower and we live in Louisiana (but born and reared in Mississippi) AND Wisconsin! Just drove down here on Monday and the cotton fields of Arkansas looked like snow had just fallen! Since the hubs refused to allow me to stop the car and get out on I-55 and snatch some, I would dearly love to win some of that gorgeous cotton!

The cotton is such a beauty. What a wonderful way to display what you are proud of and where you are from! I have been thinking about making some cotton arrangements, but the online prices are a bit high for me. So I would love to win your give-away! It would just be so awesome to get to see and feel real cotton! I don’t get tired of the Southerners. I am born and bred Colorado girl! I love my neck of the woods, too! Wow, I remember pulling a cotton sack with a strap around my sholder walking down the dirt rows between the cotton rows and pulling bowls ( not picking bowls – that was too hard)when I was a little girl. Momma wanted a new kitchen floor covering and this was the way she could afford to get it. See, I am from the older generation with lots of memories. I would love to have some cotton to display. Who new what we would appreciate later on! I follow by email.

oh, but Texans also have cotton….a necessity for our farmers here who planted it instead of corn last spring after years of drought. I had cotton all around me this year. Just LOVE the sweet little puffs of white ! But I would never sneak across the road to cut any, so I’d absolutely LOVE what you are kind enough to give away !

Love the title of the post. I have lived in the South for 40 years but as a small child in the North, believe it or not, I learned the song “Jump down, turn around, pick a bale of cotton” from my 1st grade teacher. Love driving by it when we go through Georgia. Looks like snow. I just never see it for sale anywhere but have seen some beautiful wreaths in Savannah made out of it. Would love to make one if I win. Have been a subscriber for a few months to your lovely southern blog. Thank you!

Oh, I love all of it! I must say the cotton bolls tugged on my heart. My parents met while picking cotton in Arvin, CA. She was almost 16 and daddy the handsome young sailor was 26. A beautiful love story began and lasted 54 years! Thanks for sharing your world and bringing back a sweet memory for me.
