It’s that time again.
Yay or Nay Thursday.

Last weeks subject was Wallpaper!
I’m telling you, there were a few fence sitters that said they would consider wallpaper in the future if the pattern was right, etc – but for the most part…
It was a resounding NAY.
Although grasscloth did get a major thumbs up.
We do love grasscloth, don’t we? 🙂
So what titillating subject have I chosen this week?
Nervously eating away on the Halloween candy you should be saving for next week?
(oh no, wait – that’s just me.)
(oh no, wait – that’s just me.)
This week’s subject is….
Stainless Steel Appliances.
Yay or Nay.
It’s interesting that there has been some talk around the appliance maker water coolers that stainless appliances have had their 15 minutes of fame and will soon be replaced by white, off white and possibly even gray.
Right now, my appliances are black. With the exception of my hand-hammered copper farmhouse sink.
We will be appliance shopping next year, and I cannot lie – I have envisioned the clean look of stainless with my white kitchen.
But, I also love the look of white appliances, too.
There is something to be said for the way white appliances blend into their surroundings.
Then there is the price!!!
Good grief- did I ever get a wake up call when I went appliance shopping recently? Are they stainless or silver-plated?
Look at my sweet friend, Kari’s kitchen at Thistlewood Farm. No stainless here, and look how pretty.
So what say you? Do you prefer stainless appliances? Is your home a showplace for all things stainless?
I’d love to hear all of your feedback.
xxoo
Stainless is definitely great for the majority of kitchens. It gives a clean, uncommitted color to the mix. In some kitchens I think it might be a bit too modern tho …like very country, log cabin, etc.
View CommentI went with stainless in my kitchen renovation 4 years ago. I love the look. So much classier than regular I think, and they just look like you ‘know’ how to cook even if you don’t!! ha ha I find they are not difficult to keep shiny only thing is I used to like to use magnets on my fridge, can’t do that any longer. But that might actually be a good thing. xo
View CommentI love stainless but it definitely is lots of maintenance…always polishing mine!…I love the white…if you plan on keeping the white kitchen, i think it would great…and it is easier to keep clean (can’t see the fingerprints from the grand loves) and the price is right too!!…I have seen a real comeback of the white appliances….
View CommentI dilike SS on every level and in every way. I do not, nor would I have it in my home. if i won it, I’d ask it be replaced with my choice of finish and if that wasnt an option I’d have them sit it in the garage and it would be up for sale immediatly.
View Commentnot that I have any strong feelings about it or anything.. rolf
I say nay to stainless. Don’t have it and don’t want it. My daughter has it and cannot keep it clean and free of fingerprints. That would drive me nuts. I have white because before we redid the kitchen several years ago my whole kitchen was white. The cabinets, counters, floors and appliances. When we updated the kitchen with new cabinet door and drawer fronts the only appliance that needed to be changed was the oven so we stuck with white so I wouldn’t have one oddball. I sure hope white is coming back.
View CommentI say NAY and I have forever!! I love white, always will!! When we replaced our white appliances with white appliances I was so surprised that to get my refrigerator in a smooth, gloss finish in white cost me more than it would have in stainless. Apparently if you got white you would go for the pebble finish not the smooth finish like I got. White will always be in, I have seen all the other colors come and go and white has stayed forever!!
View CommentI always longed for stainless appliances and finally got a stainless fridge when we moved into our new house. (Inherited from the previous owners); the rest of the appliances are black. We have white cabinets and black granite.
As for that stainless that I coveted for so long, I’m not the fan I once was. I like the look of it in my kitchen, but it is a pain to keep clean. There are always fingerprints on it. Always. It never gleams like in magazines. I’m not sure if I would buy stainless again. I’ve heard of a satin nickel finish that is fingerprint resistant and magnetic, too!
View CommentNay. I prefer all (or mostly) white kitchens, and we have all GE Profile appliances, and I love them! 😀
Thanks for the invite!

Nay…even tho I have a stove and dishwasher stainless…cuz my husband wanted it. I still have a black refrigerator and I love it with my black cupboards. So my vote is still Nay…
View CommentI will always want white appliances for my kitchen as the ultra modern kitchen has never been my style. My friends who have stainless steel appliances complain about how they are constanly cleaning finger prints and smudges off them. White is easy to keep clean and not the first thing you notice when you enter your kitchen. However, I do not think white would be a good choice if you have a modern kitchen.
View CommentI’ve always had white appliances, even when aqua was all the rage in the 1950s. I just like that they are cheaper; and only go out of style for a short time, then they are back. I’m very frugal that way. Nay to stainless steel. Sally
View CommentWell, I’ve had white and I’ve had stainless, and now I have a mix of black and stainless. What I would really like(if I had the means)would be a big, honking Viking gas range in a color like eggplant or red with the fridge and dishwasher camouflaged with wood panels. Well, I can dream, can’t I?
View CommentYou did not ask this but I also would not have a glass stove top! They are impossible to keep clean and looking new. I have never seen an advantage to them.
View CommentHi there….it’s been a while since I’ve blogged or read many, but I’m back into it and loved finding your Yay or Nay question. 🙂 I’ve yet to get stainless steel appliances. I drooled over them for years but it never was a time that I needed to replace my appliances. That’s Frugal huh?!? I still like the look but it’s seeming almost over done now. I probably will pick White when my fridge dies. 🙂
View CommentYay on the stainless.
View CommentOh goodness. My decision making process lately has been pretty wishy washy!
I have black-
I wish I had stainless-
OK.
Stainless it is.
Have a great week Miss Barb.

View CommentI have stainless because it is what came in the home we bought. Obviously did not build it ourselves. I haven’t minded it, but stainless seems a bit industrial looking. I have alder wood cabinets and painted my island and fan hood aqua so it works. If I had a white kitchen I would certainly go for white. Just much more of a cozy feel. Thanks for hosting the fun Yay or Nay party.

All of my appliances are currently black and stainless steel mixed together. I thought that I just HAD to have a stainless refrigerator and now that I have it, I don’t like how often I have to polish it. I can’t find a decent polish/cleaner that doesn’t leave it more streaked than when I started. So I used to be a yay, but now I think I’m a nay. I will say that while I love the idea of gray appliances, I bet they’ll be a passing fad just like Harvest Gold and Avocado Green. Nothing beats white as a classic!
View CommentI have 3 boys…. SO…. no stainless here! I currently have a blak fridge, but we are talking about building a house, so there will be some decision making in my future. I really think I may go back with black, depends on the cabinet color I choose. (decisions… decisions….)
View CommentStainless all the way baby, and a GAS stove! We currenty have a smooth top electric stove and I HATE it! EVERYTHING smudges and sticks to the ceramic top and you have to use the speical wax like cleaner and scrape it in order to clean it, which is too high maitenance for me. AND it takes FOREVER to heat up and cook the food. I could whip out a meal in half the time with a gas stove. So my vote is not only for stainless but for a GAS stove! (I couldn’t resist and had to throw that in there) LOL 🙂
View CommentOk, I say no to stainless. They show fingerprints. You have to be careful not to scratch them. I have black in my city home and white in my farmhouse. I love the white. They are the easiest to keep looking clean. Black is good too but not the glass top cook top. ugh. Again hard to keep clean looking. The only stainless I have is the refrigerator and it’s a fingerprintless kind.
View CommentI love stainless, I just bought a new fridge, with the bottom freezer in stainless, an exchange from our white fridge I gave my daughter as a second one. I also have a gas topstove. Yeah, I love stainless appliances in the kitchen and my cabinets are hard wood, so they look perfect with it. I did post it last month, though. So YAY, YAY! Big hugs to you.

Stainless is not my first choice. I think they are too hard to keep clean. I have black appliances in my kitchen. I love how they look, but they also show the dust…I live on a farm and there is a lot of dust!
View CommentI love our stainless! They are a pain to keep clean, but I love the way they look in my kitchen. I had white my whole life until we built this house and I guess I’m just tired of it.
View CommentThis is a great question and I lookd through all the answers. For me, the ideal would be a cabinet door on the fridge. It is such a huge appliance, that I would like for it to blend in with the cabinets. Our cabinets are glazed and the fridge is white – a little difference, but still bright, easy to clean….so I vote white. Linda
View CommentLove the look of stainless in others’ homes, but for me “living with stainless” feels “heavy” so I’m a white kinda gal! Just like the clean, white, airy look. Although, I do have a stainless fridge, cause it was on a super sale and has looks of cool gadgets! And being that I don’t think BHG will be knocking on my door anytime soon, I went with the mix-up to my white pallet! haha!
View CommentI have black appliances and love them. I think that stainless works well in a more modern home, but not in some designs. I love the look of white in an all white kitchen… looks clean and vintage. So not really a yay or nay.. but up to you what works best in your style and design.
View CommentI love my stainless. My stove is up keep but the rest is easy to take care of I have no problem.
Cynthia
View CommentI vote yes for Stainless. Its clean – adds an edge to any kitchen style and easy to clean – no more work than any other appliance finish – in fact – easier to maintain!! just a quick wipe with stainless steel cleaner wipe and voila! No more fingerprints. And I live in the country and i never have ‘dusty” appliances. Stainless is timeless – not a passing fad at all.
View CommentWho needs the extra work of stainless? I think the stick out like a sore thumb in most kitchens. Just saying.
View CommentNay, Nay, Nay. I really don’t care for the look. I HATE it! I have a stainless stove (because that’s all they had in the model I wanted – a slide in range w/ ceramic top). I love the ceramic top but HATE the stainless body. You MUST wipe stainless appliances down EVERY SINGLE STINKING DAY! Otherwise, they look horrible. My husband went shopping for a new garbage can for the kitchen. And it’s stainless. Again, hate it! It has to be cleaned multiple times a day, otherwise it looks like crap. Out new refrigerator is white, our dishwasher is white, our microwave is white. I’ll be keeping my eye out for a white range to replace the one we have. I have an easier time keeping my ceramic top clean, than I do the stainless body of it. So in case there’s any question, NO TO STAINLESS! 🙂
View CommentI’ve had black, white, stainless, loved them all. But when they come out with affordable hammered copper appliances, I’d trade them all in.
Bliss
View CommentNO, NO, to Stainless!!! I hate it so much. Real stainless is nice in an industrial kitchen, but I sure don’t want industrial in my kitchen, we don’t run a resturant! I think the fake stainless is just cheap and it is overdone, to the point of making me gag! I’m not very opinonated, HA. I think people feel stainlees makes a statement about their bank account, oh well, they don’t give black or white appliances away! I have black and I really feel that it looks so much warmer, it seems to really pull a kitchen together. White also works in many kitchens, but I would never have white, but I don’t hate it like I do stainlees.
View CommentI am so glad you thought of this discussion because it has been on my mind a lot lately! I am always on the tail end of trends and wondered what would be the next appliance trend. I have white appliances and will possibly be getting a dishwasher soon and wondered what finish to get. I love the look of stainless but know as soon as I go to stainless, the trend will change (since I’m always one of the last to be trendy). I had read somewhere that “colors” (blues, pinks, etc) might become trendy but I would NEVER go for that — reminds me too much of “avocado” and “harvest” shades of the 70’s. I want white to come back – it will be cheaper for me in the long run! 🙂 (I LOVE Thistlewood Farm but never noticed her white appliances until now)
View CommentMy frige is black and stainless, the rest of my appliances are black. Love the frige, not a lot of stainless to polish. So nay to all stainless steal, but a combo of stainless and black…yay! Then again I may change my mind once our partial kitchen redo is finished.
View CommentTough one!! I thought I was committed to stainless, but I have to admit that white kitchen is stunning.
View CommentI’m a white appliance girl. I just never liked the look of gray, stainless-steel appliances. They are kind of industrial cool which is kind of neat, but I love the look of an all white kitchen. Actually my favorite kitchen is one where the appliances are all hidden and look like cabinetry. If I could afford my dream kitchen, that’s what I’d have.
View CommentI have to stick with my good ole’ white appliances- at times I have thought about stainless but I love the white with my white cabinets!
View CommentI have been thinking that now that so many people HAVE stainless steel appliances, that the trend will definitely change, just like fashion! I will say that I have stainless steel in my Birmingham and Orange Beach kitchens, and it is beautiful, BUT, it’s a pain to keep clean! It’s good exercise to polish it though, once every few days with a spray stainless steel cleaner does the trick, but I don’t have little ones in and out. I better stay LOVING it since I have 2 new refrigerators!
View CommentAll of my appliances, big and small are stainless. I don’t have an “ultra modern” kitchen – it’s warm and inviting, and the stainless blends well. I love it.
