TEN WAYS TO ADD FARMHOUSE STYLE TO ANY HOME
If you’re like me, there are days you drive away from your home and when
you come back, you kinda hope that someone has replaced your current house
with a quaint, old Farmhouse.
Something pre-turn of the century, batten board, huge porch, roses,
picket fence… the whole nine yards.
Now, don’t get me wrong… I love our home.
But, I can’t lie. The “farm girl” in me has always wanted, and always will
want – a true farmhouse.
But, if you’re also like me – you probably won’t ever live in a farmhouse,
so you do the next best thing.
You Bring Farmhouse to You!
Here are Ten Ways to Add Farmhouse Style to a Suburban Home:
1) Beadboard:
Whether you go with the real McCoy, or the 4×8 sheets of beadboard you
can get at Lowe’s, you cannot go wrong when adding this architectural feature.
Placed on the walls or used as a backsplash, painted white or light blue –
beadboard instantly adds an instant touch of Farmhouse to your home.
*4×8 sheets of bead board at Lowe’s starts at about $18.00/sheet.

I have long admired the copper ones, but didn’t think about the care require…even though for years we had those pots with copper at the bottom and I remember using “Twinkle” every time they were washed to make the copper shine!

Great list, and a lot of them apply to cottage as well.
I love my copper sink; I guess I like imperfection from oxidation, but I think it looks beautiful, and it will last a lifetime. My dad was a plumber and he was always making me something from copper.
After seven years in my former home, my gorgeous Kohler was no longer gorgeous; regular sinks only last so long. At least copper is recyclable, and one should be able to get something for it as scrap metal.

I might be one of the rare ones that actually lives in a 100 year old farmhouse. However, I’ve been here 3 years and haven’t decorated a bit! I’m overwhelmed! I’m slowly getting a few pieces and looking at blogs to get ideas. I love ALL your stuff here and actually have several of the pieces that are in your hutches, etc. Paint scares the heck out of me! I’ve took the plunge and picked a color for 2 rooms and after a week of painting, etc, I don’t like the color! I have the hardest time with color.

I actually do live in a 100 year old farmhouse. However, I am totally overwhelmed with decorating. We bought the house 3.5 years ago and I haven’t done much. With help from fabulous blogs like yours I’m at least getting ideas and a game plan! I love your pictures and I actually have a few of the platters / pitchers/ etc that you have shown in your hutches and vignettes.

I love farmhouse style! I opted not to go with a farmhouse sink (which I love) because a few neighbors had them and said water dripped all over the lower cupboard and warped the wood. I’ve never heard this before but ended up going with stainless steel. I also have a granite countertop that I love. Wood wouldn’t work well in my kitchen but I sure do love the look!

I love your hammered copper sink and I would be interested to know what the upkeep is on one of those? I just think it looks stunning but if it is a lot of work I would understand wanting to change it out.
View CommentBarb says
Hi Gilly – I have to be honest with you, I replaced it with a white, ceramic Farmhouse sink from IKEA because it was getting impossible to upkeep. I just felt I wanted something clean and white, plus I had just painted my cabinets white, too. I loved it while it was new, though. It gave me several beautiful years. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! ~Barb

I know this an old post, but it should be resurrected once a month—for its timeless style. Clearly you have a handle on Farm Style and good clean, nonsensical living! We tested an IKEA butcher block counter on our Island and will be installing everywhere, when we replace our cabinets. So far we have oiled it three times…and it has a few stains, but like you stated, it only enhances the look of the cabinet. Not too mention cutting down on the noise and breakage, as I am a klutz.
Thanks for the wonderful post, and I would considering doing this one now and again, and again, and again.
View CommentBarb says
Sandi – we are also eyeing the IKEA Butcherblock counntertops and I love that you have given them such a good review. Did you see my review for my new IKEA Farmhouse Sink. If not, you can do a search. I LOVE it. 🙂

Thank you for the inspirations. I do have a farmhouse – built 1900 – 1905; town has built up around it. But it is a mess, not farmhouse like, except the upstairs bathroom which I gutted and remodeled with the 1926 claw foot tub – which I had the porcelain replaced. I will be using some of your ideas when we tackle our kitchen and living room. I wish I had your help with our very strange master bedroom.
View CommentLisa @ Lisas Creative Designs says
Love these photos especially the first image of the farmhouse in the country. That is my dream home! We love in a subdivision. I love my house but it is too contemporary and it does not have the country setting I yearn for. I do incorporate country farmhouse style into my home to make it feel warm and cozy. Maybe someday I will find my dream farmhouse in the country!

Truly inspirational ideas!! I too love the farmhouse feel and look! Going to give this old house of mine a real flip that makes ME happy ! I have collected lots of little things but it will be the actual changes to walls, floors, countertops and of course the requisite paint and trim that will give this place the character it is in dire need of…NO MORE ORANGE WOOD !!! LOL. But on a side note, that shower curtain is dreamy…but too steep for my budget, gotta put it on the dying list.?
