Love is a many splendid thing.
Especially when it comes in a jar. With tri-color icing. And a little spoon. Love can be many things, but a chocolate-cherry cupcake. Now THAT’s love. Today I am sharing how easy it is to achieve an ombre icing affect. You will never want single color icing again.
Ombre Iced Valentine’s Day Cupcakes in a Jar
……………………………………………….
For these cupcakes, I used a basic chocolate cake recipe, as well as, a basic buttercream frosting recipe. I did add some chopped maraschino cherries and cherry juice to the batter. Chocolates and Cherries go together like hugs and kisses.
HERE’S WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- India Tree Natural Food Colors
- 12″ Disposable Piping Bags
- Large Reusable Piping Bag
- Large Star Piping Tip
- Piping Bag Coupler
- Assorted Valentine Cupcake Toppers
- Edible Glitter
- Valentine Sprinkles (opt)
- Valentine Ribbon
- Valentine Tags
LET’S GET STARTED…
I divided the frosting into three bowls…
Using my favorite *Natural Food Colorings by India Tree I made a dark pink icing and a light pink icing.
I used about 7 drops for the dark pink, and 3 drops for the light pink.
Once I was happy with my icing colors, I loaded each color into a 12″ disposable piping bag.
You need to snip off the bottom of each bag about 1/2″.
I loaded a larger 18″ pastry bag with a star tip. Holding all three filled icing bags…
I dropped them together into the 18″ bag, adjusting so they were all three level inside the bag. I started squeezing the bag until all three colors started coming out together. Then using a swirling motion…
I iced the cupcakes. This is what the ombre effect looks like from above…
I generously sprinkled some crystal sugar on top to give the cupcakes an icy effect.
Finally, I started digging through my bins of scrapbook odd ‘n ends.
Cute Mason Jar-inspired tags with a Valentine theme were perfect for the fronts, along with polka dot heart picks which coordinated with the polka dot ribbon.
Tiny little spoons were ties on the side with ribbon…
You can’t serve cupcakes without the milk. Miniature milk jars with cute red and white striped straws are ties with more scrapbook tags.
Who would you love to surprise with these Ombre Iced Valentine Cupcakes in a Jar? I can’t wait to try this same ombre icing for other holidays.
