Meatloaf.
Here in this Southern house, it’s as much a staple as sweet tea and cornbread. Now, I am not saying Meatloaf is a strictly Southern delicacy. To be honest, I don’t even know the origination of meatloaf. I’ll let y’all look that one up and let me know. 😀
I just know… we Southerners love us some good ole’ meatloaf and mashed taters. And don’t EVEN think about serving that meatloaf without a slathering of ketchup baked on top.
I am sure there are 500+ recipes for meatloaf on the internet. Maybe more. I just know that I have been making and serving Mama’s Meatloaf Recipe all of my adult life. I am happy to share it here with you!

Continuing on with “Winter Cravings: Classic Comfort Foods”…
This is the 4th recipe I have shared as part of this series, but I am loving sharing some of my favorite Comfort Food Recipes so I think I will share for a few more weeks, and then I will compile them all together in one mini e-book.
…………………………………………………………………………..
When you read the title of this post and recipe, I’m sure you think this is MY Mama’s recipe huh? Well, in some ways it is, because my Mama definitely used this recipe. But actually, it’s my grandmother’s recipe. Mama said at some point soon after she was married over 60 years ago, she copied down her Mama’s Meatloaf recipe to add to her recipe box, and she wrote Mama’s Meatloaf Recipe. Two generations later, it’s still known as this.
I won’t lie, I make my own variation of this recipe at times by adding grated garlic or fresh herbs or sauteed peppers, etc, but it’s still the same basic recipe that my grandmother made, my Mama made, my sister makes, I make and now my daughter-in-law makes for her family.
I would say that qualifies as a tried and true family recipe.
And what do you serve with Meatloaf? Ya’ gotta have mashed potatoes (gravy is optional) and then some kind of vegetable like glazed carrots or green beans.
Of course Meatloaf can be served anytime of the week…but I have to say, is there anything more comforting on a Sunday afternoon than Meatloaf for dinner? 🙂
…………………………………………………………………..
- 1 lb ground beef (not too lean as some fat is needed)
- 1/2 lb ground veal or ground pork
- 1 slice bread (broken or chopped finely)
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 small vidalia onions or sweet onion, finely chopped or grated
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 tablespoons ketchup
- 2⁄3 cup milk
- 4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar, packed firm
- 1⁄2 cup ketchup
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Meatloaf: Combine all meatloaf ingredients and mix so they are well blended. Place in a greased casserole dish or loaf pan. Smooth the top.
- Sauce: Combine all ingredients and mix well. Pour evenly over meatloaf mixture.
- Bake approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes , depending on thickness of meatloaf.
- * You can reserve a bit of the sauce and pour over the meatloaf after it comes out of the oven if desired.

Meatloaf is the first thing I ever learned to cook from a recipe- the Betty Crocker cookbook for kids- way back in the day! And it’s still one of my favorites- can’t wait to try the sauce- I usually just have ketchup and sometimes I lay strips of bacon across the top of mine while baking.

This recipe is very close to my Mama’s, which I love and which I have passed on to my grandson (age 13). It’s his favorite meal. Good ole’ Southern boy that he is.

This looks so good. Great photos. I love meatloaf myself, but the family doesn’t. Sad for me. But I can make small ones and save them for times when it’s just me, right? and I can’t wait for Vidalia onions to come back in season.

Meatloaf…yummy! One of my favorites! I love that you’re sharing some of your tried and true recipes. My daughter put together a very nice recipe book “Family Favorites” of many family recipes. They were given to family members as Christmas gifts. Well received by all. Now we have 80% of our family recipes in a very nice book form. I keep mine displayed…not only is it pleasant to view, it has the wonderful recipes of by-gone years.
I’m loving your blog.

I have not made a meatloaf in forever, I really need to fix that! Yours looks absolutely delicious!

Barb, you must have been reading my mind. We haven’t had meatloaf in ages, so, I just bought some nice, grass-fed ground chuck and some ground pork to make one. But since I don’t have a go-to recipe, finding your posting is pure SERENDIPITY. Slices of satisfying, sauce-topped comfort is gonna be making some happy mouths around here!

Really enjoying visiting your blog. Just went over to see your Homemade Cornbread Mix recipe after copying down the meatloaf recipe from your Mama and grandmother. I’ve always kept Jiffy corn muffin mix on hand to make muffins. Now I’m going to save some money and still be able to have easy, fragrant, sweet, golden corn muffins (or cornbread!) whenever. Thanks! (Now I have just one problem… what to look at NEXT at everdayhomeblog.)
View CommentJanice neal says
OOPS… typo alert… I meant to type “everydayhomeblog” in my comment about the cornbread mix recipe… not everdayhomeblog. Sorry. Hope it can be corrected.
