Blog.
You may not know this, but its actually a Latin word.
Yes, Latin. Who knew?
The root of the word “log” means to write something down, or to “log” your inner, deepest feelings. No, really. 🙂
Or, in my case – confessions.
For example – I shared, or b-logged, that I was out of clean underwear last week.
That’s right. I confessed to you, my dearest and most revered friends – that I was so desperate for clean undergarments I actually considered stealing The Hubbs’ last clean pair of tighty-whities for my own personal use.
But, that was last week’s confession.
This week…we are going to delve into my personal hygiene. Dental hygiene, to be exact.
Ohhhhh, now I see I have your full interest.
Yesterday, I shared my easy DIY Project for a Jute-Wrapped Bottle with decorative scrapbook keys.
I have another confession. No, no – not more tales of underwear… but commercial mouthwash makes me gag. I have tried them all. I try my very hardest to keep it in my mouth to do the full 2-minute swish, but I never make it.
Like never of all the nevers.
I am a 2-minute Swisher Failure.
So a few months ago, as part of my attempt to “de-chemical-ize” (another Latin word, I’m pretty sure) – I did some research on Homemade Mouthwash.
That’s when I discovered this cool site called DIYNatural.com. I had found lots of recipes on other sites but what I liked about the one found at this site was the addition of Tea Tree Essential Oil.
While I will not delve into the benefits of Tea Tree Oil, and there are many – I will say this has been called a “little medicine cabinet in a bottle.”
It’s only natural that adding it to your mouthwash makes perfect sense for your dental health since one of the properties is that it is naturally antiseptic and antibacterial.
*disclaimer, I am not a dentist. In fact, dentists scare me to death and just the word “dentist” makes me break out into a cold sweat.
I found both the peppermint oil and tea tree oil online. **(Always make sure you use 100% pure grade, therapeutic oils.) The only factor about tea tree oil that I have read is the oil you purchase should come available in a brown bottle. Not exactly sure why, but it has something to do with light exposure.
So here is the recipe. I added a few drops of organic food coloring for the purpose of taking pics. And it also looks like a commercial mouthwash for the benefit of The Hubbs who thinks I am going “all natural” on him.
ssshhhhhhh….. 🙂
*(I made a double batch by the way.)
So that’s it. More confessions from The Everyday Home – whether you wanna hear them or not.
Now don’t you wish the Latin for Blog was “keeping certain things to yourself.” ha!

Great idea and your mouthwash bottle is really pretty. I always think natural is better. I remember, as a child, sometimes we used a mixture of salt and baking soda for brushing our teeth.

Can’t wait to try the recipe! Will you please clarify one thing? I am guessing that the 1/2 distilled or filtered water is 1/2 cup. Is this correct? Thank you for sharing. Frani

Great info Barb, I use baking soda sometimes on my teeth and it is a natural deoderizer so makes perfect sense. Love you pretty bottle too!

I too, am confused by the lack of size in the water reference. It says “1/2 Distilled or Filtered Water”. Is that one 2-liter, half cup, half liter, half a 2 liter, half gallon? An update to the posting would be really great. I am sure we would really appreciate it. I made the mistake of guessing the use of one tablespoon of vinegar in a glass of water for indigestion with very distasteful results, until I verified the quantities. Thank you.

It is supposed to be 1/2 CUP of the water. I just checked it out on the website http://www.diynatural.com for the actual recipe.
