Fabric!
It has always been the one design element that has gotten me into trouble! I can see a beautiful piece of fabric and within 5 minutes I have a total visual re-design of my entire home.
I have always had a passion for fabric. I inherited my
Mother’s Fabric Gene. I remember hours spent at the local
Five and Dime downtown in my hometown, touching and feeling fabrics while my Mama flipped through page after page of pattern books. The smell of a fabric store gets my design juices going every time. 🙂

Five and Dime downtown in my hometown, touching and feeling fabrics while my Mama flipped through page after page of pattern books. The smell of a fabric store gets my design juices going every time. 🙂
So, when I spotted this Tree of Life Crewel Fabric –
I knew it had to have a place in my home.
My kitchen!
It’s my starting point. I used to always tell my clients to “pick one thing you love and build on it.” I have been longing for blue in my home for a few years. I cannot imagine a prettier pattern to begin my process of “de-red-ifying” my home than this.
Can’t you just see this fabric made into pretty drapes at my large window in my breakfast room – with a healthy waterfall of blue and white fringe down each side? Perhaps some matching chair cushions with a blue and white mini check piping?
My kitchen and breakfast room walls will be painted khaki. I love the thoughts of this crisp blue and white fabric against warm khaki walls.
Did I tell you I am switching out the dishes in my breakfast room hutch? It currently is filled with some of my collection of Pink and White, Ironstone from Mr. Grit’s late Mother, as well as, some vintage pink depressionware.
Notice the hutch is painted black. So is my breakfast table and chairs. These will be painted white, as well.
Once they have received a fresh coat of paint, I will be moving my collection of Blue and White Staffordshire from the English Hutch in my Morning Room….
… to my breakfast room.
See where I am going here? 🙂
In the meantime, I am browsing the web looking at these…
(White Farmhouse Sinks and Vintage-Style Faucets)
and these subway tiles…
(check out the Carrera Marble – love!)
Watching for sales on these…
…trying to decide between these…
(Leaning towards this one by the way!)
Also – measuring the wall opposite the hutch for some of these…
Built-ins. More Love.
Lots of choices. Lots of decisions. And all because of….
As my dear friend, Kathysue, of Good Life of Design says….”enjoy the process.”
And so the process begins…. please stay tuned.

While I am saddened to see all that lucious red go (your kitchen was my inspiration for my “still in progress” kitchen makeover), I love the fabric and direction you are taking your “new” kitchen in and can’t wait to see how it all turns out. BTW, I am LOVING my kitchen transformation (even though it may NEVER get finished) and want to thank you for being my inspiration!

Love, love the fabric!..It is going to look fantastic in your kitchen..You are off to a great start. Looking forward to your lighting choice. I know you like the 3rd one..I am leaning toward the cleaner lines of the 2nd one, but then again bling is good!

It’s going to be just yummy, Barb. I can’t wait to watch the progress and see the end result! I am exactly like you when it comes to fabric – and I do mean exactly! My mother’s fav pass time was to go to Piece Good’s (remember that store?) and spend hour upon hour perusing the pattern books and then buying everything needed to create whatever outfit she chose. I found it all so booooring when I was young, but it sure did instill an adoration of fabric in me as an adult! PS: I hope we have the opportunity to get together when beach weather resumes this Spring!
