Old Fashioned Dining Room Sideboard (and free printable)
Pretty English dishes take center stage on this mahogany sideboard dressed in old fashioned Christmas colors of red with black and white checked accents.
You may have instantly caught on to my Christmas theme this year. As I said when I shared our Old Fashioned Christmas Mantel last week – the color scheme and style are generally pulled from the Dining Room and spread throughout the remainder of the home in varying ways. The English Sideboard in our Dining Room is no exception.
Before we get started, I am so happy to let you know I am taking part in a 3-Day Home Tour. Myself a few other bloggers are getting a late start…but we decided it’s “Better Late Than Never” to share Christmas Inspiration.
Please make sure you follow all the way to the end and visit each of these blogs.
Rarely will you see my prized Staffordshire Soup Tureen piece not on display in our home. I love to fill it with fresh greenery and berries and a variety of clippings. (I may even use it for soup eventually. LOL ) This year, I added a small evergreen and surrounded it with fresh magnolia, fresh cuttings from my yard and bits and pieces of “faux-liage.”
The same black and white checked ribbon was used here as on the mantel. At the last minute I tucked in some faux antlers for some extra texture. But the cutest of the touches is the one I love the most…
A small, Star Printable on a chalkboard background with “O Holy Night.” So easy to print and cut out and use in a variety of ways. I added a bit of ribbon scrap and simply tied it to the top of the tree.

Above the landscape print I usually go all out with multi-layered garlands laden with white lights. This year, I went simpler and used some cedar along with more “bits ‘n pieces” of faux-liage and berries. Oh, and more black and white checked ribbon woven through.
One of the items I added was a sale item I found last year at 75% off at Homegoods. I had forgotten all about it until I started unpacking my Christmas bins. Do you do that also? Buy things on sale after the holidays and pack them away and forget you had bought them? 🙂
Look at this sweet “Santa’s Laundry Line” Garland I hung on the front of the Sideboard…
My sweet 5-year old Granddaughter declared it as “adorable.” I agree. She is enamored with it. 🙂
On each side of the Cedar Tree Centerpiece I added a cute sign trimmed in black and white check… and one of my favorite mini pink and white pieces…a cute candy dish. It’s not vintage but I love it all the same.
I tucked in one of the round chalkboard printables which I shared the other day from my Homemade Chalkboard Napkin Ring Project.
I am loving this simpler decorating style of mine. It may not appear as “simple” to some of you, but trust me when I say it is scaled back quite a bit.
I know there are many who have beautiful and breathtaking homes with lots of non-traditional colors this year. Oh stare at them with awe and it amazes me over all of the time and effort that goes into these homes. But, call me “old fashioned” because I adore using traditional colors of reds and whites and greens.
This year, I added black but in “old fashioned” checks, as well. Thankfully, there is not right or wrong way to decorate for Christmas. One’s home is a reflection of who they are and most of all, what makes them happy.
Speaking of “happy”… this picture above cracks me up every time I see it. I inadvertently left an object and did not see it when I was taking images. Do you see it? This image is the perfect description of both me and my home. Perfectly Imperfect. And that’s okay with me. 🙂

Hi Barb,
Your sideboard is gorgeous, (even with that touch of purple ). I too enjoy traditional red and green at the holidays, and I even use my plate collection of red transferware. I almost put it out on the table for this tour but did not want it to take away from the centerpiece. They will be perfect with some dark red depression glass salad bowls on Christmas Day. Now, that tureen…. Fabulous! I going to be on the hunt for one!! Love the way you decorated it with ribbons and greenery.

Love the entire sideboard, but will be looking for a sprig of greenery to make (copy) a small tree for the kitchen. That little guy in the tureen is adorable! Thanks so much for sharing! Susie from The Chelsea Project

As a sewist, you may have just inspired a tiny tree festooned in scissors for next year! Oh, and if you ever tire of that R&W Soup Tureen, I’ll be happy to take it off your hands. I promise to not make soup too!

I love all the red and green- especially the red transferware and soup tureen! I’m the same way, I can’t imagine not using red when decorating for Christmas. The black check ribbon is the perfect touch. Happy New Year!

Hi Barb! Is it the white lantern that you forgot? I do that all the time in that something I really don’t want sneaks into the side or background somehow {usually the ugly printer or a cord}. Lol! I agree with your granddaughter, the Santa’s laundry line is adorable!!! Loving your sidetable display and the soup tureen is gorgeous! I have a small one with tiny lavender-colored pansies on it that I put a candle in with greenery for a display on an outdoor tablesetting this year, and I need to use it more. It was a $4 thriftshop find this summer. 🙂 I do love your red English transferware; I was thrilled to find some last year just before Christmas and it’s all a keeper!!! Stopping by from TFT and Beverly’s Eclectic Red Barn today.
Have a great New Year’s!
