An Old Fashioned Christmas.
I can’t help but think of peppermint sticks and popcorn garland which we hung on the cedar trees my Daddy used to cut down in the woods on our farm. I think of mama’s homemade cakes and pies – and gifts wrapped in brown paper tied with string. There are so many things which come to mind when I think of an Old Fashioned Christmas. No matter what style of Christmas decor is throughout the rest of the home, when it comes to our Kitchen and Breakfast Room – there will always be an Old Fashioned Christmas look and feel. Because truly – Christmas begins in the kitchen at The Everyday Home.
………………………………………………………..
My grandbabies stopped by this afternoon after school to see how “Grammy” was feeling. I have not been able to keep them or see them very much since this whole kidney stone issue started, and Grammy’s heart is sad. They had not seen the small tree I usually put up in our Breakfast Room. It’s a tree that my own Mama used when my son was the same age as his children. Yes, it’s that old.
She still has the ornaments and garlands she collected over the years – candy and toys. Mama used to put up at least 4-5 trees every year. Now, she is down to one and me and the grandloves usually go over and help her out. Last month, I shared some Mason Jar Christmas Ornaments I had made with some scrapbook paper.
I also made some Stag designs and some plain plaid ones, too. But, in the end I decided to stick with the Old Red Car and Tree Design and the plain, plaid ornaments.
I had purchased some pompom garland and a mini-knitted sweater garland, and I wanted to keep the focus simple. Just the garlands, the Mason Jar Ornaments and some old fashioned candy canes. That’s all.
Underneath the tree, I added a vintage tub full of gifts and this cute “Letter to Santa” typewriter I just could not resist buying this year.
On the blue cabinet, I kept the tall chalkboard in place and added a cotton, boxwood and red berry wreath with a red checked bow. Doesn’t get more old-fashioned than red checks, does it?
I had made a quick run (and when I say “quick” I mean NO makeup, dirty hair in a pony tail and ratty jeans and tshirt) for some extension cords, because evidently the 976 extension cords I had already purchased over the years grew legs and walked away. That’s when I spied this lovely…
I am pretty sure that the person who created this cute Old Red Car with Tree knew I was making Mason Jar Ornaments with this same car. I am certain of it! 🙂
A plaid runner pulled in the other plaid elements of the room. Remember my Jolly Ole’ Santa Breakfast Room Tablescape?
Once the runner and car were in place, I added a cute little tree in a tin bucket and simple paper tags as ornaments. Nothing fancy.
The hardest part of creating a vignette on this blue chest is the tiered stand on the end. I could have switched it out for something else, but this vignette needed the height to balance out the chalkboard.
I just started filling each tier with things I love and things which reminded me of my childhood and an Old Fashioned Christmas.
Candy canes and cedar…
– and bottle brush trees and berries.
One of the last few elements I added were two signs, one brand new but with a vintage vibe that will stay after Christmas. I purchased this “Farm Fresh” tin sign in honor of our Farmhouse-style kitchen and my own personal farm roots.
The second is this Christmas sign which has one of my favorite sayings.
I love this little section of our home and how it casts a soft glow throughout the kitchen at night. These next few weeks will be busy with a large Christmas party this weekend, and then a marathon baking and cookie decorating session next week. Plus, there are still gifts to be wrapped and I have to complete our Christmas cards. All this will take place at our Kitchen Table. A small, wood table that is covered in nicks and scratches, and there is probably some sticky syrupy fingerprints somewhere on it. And that is perfectly fine. Because it’s just like the table me and my sister and my brother grew up with at my mama and daddy’s house. The Family Table – where we enjoyed so many Old Fashioned Christmases of our own…
I am determined to pass along these same memories and feelings of Christmas to my own family for safekeeping. And I hope, when I am long gone, my grandchildren and their children will look at something like a mason jar ornament or an old red car – and think of me and Grandpa. And remember. And smile. And feel all the love we bestowed upon them.

Carol, when I wrote this post I was thinking it was Lowe’s but I got to thinking about it and it was The Home Depot. No really, the Depot. 😀 Hope you can find one, too. Thanks for stopping by. ~Barb

Your home looks so very cozy and warm! I LOVE the colors and, the blue dresser is one of my favorite pieces. The wreath is stunning and very natural looking. The chalk board makes the wreath really stand out. All of your bow’s are gorgeous alone and together. The truck gives the vignette authenticity. Everything is WONDERFUL and TFS.
View CommentP.S. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery from the stone situation. I have had stones for years. From the age of 23- 70{the present}. My Dr. recommended drinking lemon and hot water everyday. I can’t remember to do that. Just pure fresh lemon, not lemonade, crystal lite or any other form. I hope this is a blessing for you.
