I wasn’t going to do it.
I wasn’t going to use plaid again this year. I looked at all of the pretty Christmas ribbons as soon as they arrived at Hobby Lobby, and I even decided upon several non-plaid versions. Some cute printed designs, a checkered design and a cute, striped design. I placed them all in my cart and strolled around Hobby Lobby looking at all of the fantastic new Christmas decor. And every single thing I was drawn to was….plaid. To include a beautiful Jolly ‘Ole Santa. So, I gave up. I am a plaid gal through and through. Some would even say I am “Mad for Plaid.” 😀

Once I decided that “Mad for Plaid” would be my Christmas theme this year, it was game on! If I was going to be “Plaid Girl” I was gonna give it all I had. That included the breakfast room table. I gathered many of the elements from Hobby Lobby, and I am happy to say that all of these items are still in stock at my local store, so maybe they are at your location, too.
Here are a few of the elements I used…
And here is how it all came together….
I started with a plain, white tablecloth and added two plaid runners criss-crossed in the middle. I then layered white wood chargers, my new red Hobby Lobby plates, and basic white salad plates.
I love the red Hobby Lobby plates. They are melamine but look like they are ceramic. I am fine with that as they are much safer in this house with lots of little hands to contend with. Small plaid-wrapped gifts adorn each place-setting, and each package sports one of the Hobby Lobby Gift tags I chose. I am so in love with the typed-print Christmas paper I found.
In the center, I created what I call a “Collage Centerpiece.” It’s a collection of several items gathered in the center. I chose a vintage-style Farmhouse bucket as a planter. Don’t be afraid to use everyday items such as this in your Christmas decorations. A mini cedar is surrounded by snow and mini ornaments. I love this look.
My Jolly Santa and a green-striped wrapped package were also added to the centerpiece along with a white votive candle and a scattering of sleigh bells and ornaments.
Cute snowflake mugs add some whimsy…
I used two styles of Hobby Lobby tags… “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” below, was used on the small placesetting packages.
… and this vintage style “Merry Christmas” tag was used on a small mason jar filled with cedar, berries and mini pinecones.
Look up, Santa! Smile – you’re on camera. 😀
I love how this table came together, and it was so quick and easy, too.
This table was pulled together for less than $100. Best of all, these elements can easily be used in other areas of your home.
If you have a local Hobby Lobby, I would encourage you to hurry over and shop for your Christmas decor soon. It’s selling out fast!

Here is another way you could use gift tags. A vintage style “Merry Christmas” tag was used on a small mason jar filled with cedar, berries and mini pinecones.

Love it, love it, love it!!! Are those chargers from Hobby Lobby too? I may play hookie tomorrow and rush to get them….. and then cook all night to make up the time for Thanksgiving free-for-all!!! Your design work is always exceptional but you really knock it out of the park at the holidays!!! Never apologize for plaid – it’s a classic!!!
Hope you and yours have the best holiday season ever! Hugs from the Rockies, Pippa

Hi Barb! I received the message that I won the giveaway! I’m so excited! I didn’t expect it at all ! I was trying to find a way to email you but couldn’t find one anywhere. Could you please email me ? My husband says he wants your grandson to pick our name for the Publisher’s Clearing House prize ! You don’t look old enough to have a grandson! He must be very very young. Thank you !!

I love the way you layer things to add depth and texture. The entire table is charming and inviting. It was great to get the long shot and see how this festive table fit into your décor/furniture. Thanks for sharing and using Hobby Lobby as it is a place that even us folks in the sticks can access without too long of a drive or paying shipping!
