If you have never used a package of
Lipton Onion Soup Mix
in any of your recipes, then it’s possible that
you’re not American.
LOL. Just kidding.
But, I would guess it’s one of the
most popular boxed spice mixes bought at
the grocery store.
So, today I am sharing my version of a
Homemade Onion Soup Mix.
Welcome to another
The Everyday Home Kitchen Hack.
#homehack
I am also going to take a second guess and
say that the California Dip Recipe
(made with mayo, sour cream and onion soup mix)
may be one of the most prepared recipes
using this beefy-onion mixture.
But, one of my family’s favorite side dishes
is
Beefy-Onion Potatoes and Peppers.
The soup mix packages are relatively inexpensive
to purchase, a few dollars per box.
But, when you only need a few tablespoons to
flavor a dish, you then have a large portion of
an opened package you have to store.
Plus, making my own mix allows me to lower
the sodium content just a bit.
I use Herb Ox Granulated Beef Bouillon, which
is gluten-free and sodium-free.
I find it at my local grocery store.
The remainder of the ingredients are standard
pantry staples…
You could substitute Beef Bouillon cubes if
necessary, but these tend to have a moister content.
Here is the recipe for my
Homemade Onion Soup Mix:
- 3/4 Cup Dried Minced Onion
- 1/3 Cup Herb Ox Beef Bouillon Granules
- 1/4 teaspoon Pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon Sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon Paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon Celery Salt
- 1 Tablespoon Parsley Flakes
- 4 teaspoons Onion Powder
- Pour everything into a bowl and mix well. Store in an airtight container. If you need to use the same amount as one package of store bought Onion Soup Mix, you will require 5 Tablespoons of this homemade mix.
It takes less than 5 minutes to assemble.
This makes about a pint jar full, but you could easily
double this recipe to make more.
I love that you can put this in a pretty
glass jar and create a tag and give these as
gifts in a jar.
For the potatoes, here is you need to do…
- 5-6 Medium potatoes, cubed
- 1 large green or red pepper, chopped
- 5 Tablespoons Homemade Onion Soup Mix
- 1 1/2 Tbs Olive Oil
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In an iron skillet, or other oven-proof baking dish - add cubed potatoes and chopped peppers. Pour olive oil over top, and toss so veggies are well coated. Add soup mix, toss again to distribute onion mixture. Bake for about 20 mins, stir potatoes and peppers, bake another 20 mins or until potatoes are done and edges are crispy brown.
- *to kick up this recipe a bit, grate fresh parmesan cheese over still warm potatoes and peppers prior to serving.
That’s it.
*THE* best
Beefy Onion and Pepper Potatoes
recipe you will ever ask for.
It’s always a hit at potlucks and get-togethers.
Something so simple, but tastes so good.
Simple, Country Living!
You can even try cutting up a variety of
different seasonal vegetables to
substitute for the potatoes?
I love a mixture of squash and zucchini,
for example. And Brussel Sprouts!!!!
Oh my, now my mouth is watering.
This mix is great in stews and on roasts
and in soups and even…
California Onion Dip.
