I often smile at the many styles featured within our home.
From Traditional to Farmhouse to English Country to French Country and everything in between. There are even room with a combination of all three. Years ago, the word “eclectic” became popular as a way to desribe of mixture of styles. I think whoever coined this word must have walked through my home. I recently added a few changes to our formal Dining Room. The goal was to “de-formalize” it and bring in a more casual and approachable style. I am sharing one of those changes here…
Dining Room Buffet for Fall
The biggest change is our huge brick fireplace. I will share that next week along with my Fall mantel. On the opposite side of the fireplace, I added some beadboard. Not the traditional beadboard, but the larger slat variety. I adore this look. Our dining room is an inner room and does not get a lot of natural light. I felt by adding a wall of white beadboard, it would help lighten the room. It would also take away from the formality of the room.
Here is a before of our Dining Room…
I have to stop here and say that I was completely inspired by one of my BFF’s, Suzy at Worthing Court. She recently re-did their Dining Room and when I visited her recently and saw this beautiful space, I knew it was the answer to our dark dining room issues.
Our lower walls already featured mouldings, so I decided (at least for now) to save those and apply the beadboard above the chair rail. I may change it later, but for now I like the combination,
We moved out the vintage bow-front chest to the Foyer, and replaced it with an older buffet I bought years ago from The Bombay Co. Y’all remember that store? I am so sad it went out of business. I am trying to decide whether or not I should paint this piece. I am leaning towards YES, although The Hubbs is saying no. (um, hello? It’s not like it’s real wood or a valued heirloom) LOL What do YOU think? Paint…yay or nay. (I want to leave the top dark btw.)
I knew my beloved pink and white Staffordshire plates would remain. And my fave landscape print. But, I wanted a change. I wanted to add a bit of farmhouse to the English Country style. I remembered I had several pairs of shutters left over from flip house jobs. So I went digging through and found two black ones which would work. The size that is, not the color.
After a few layers of paint, which I will share next week, they were perfect. Once the plates were added back on the wall, I was in love with the way it turned out. I guess you could call it “eclectic.” 😀
My beloved Vintage Staffordshire Soup Tureen is filled with a faux arrangement for now. We are heading to the NC Mountains next week and I will be bringing back a Suburban full of pumpkins and gourds from the Farmer’s Market.
I added lots of pheasant and quail feathers to the arrangement…
I added my pair of pheasants flanking the tureen…
I may be adding in some more pink and white dishes, and I am on the lookout for some alternative chairs to place on each side of the buffet, but for now I am happy with the results.
Thank you for letting me share our Dining Room Buffet for Fall.
xxoo, Barb

Oh, it looks amazing! What a difference. I love the color and can’t wait to see how you painted those shutters. I like the table just as it is, but I think it would look awesome painted too, so I vote YES!
View CommentBeautiful!! Did you remove the moldings before putting up the breadboard or just butt it up against them? (And nailed or glued?)
View CommentHi Terry – there was a wide chair rail above the mouldings so we just butted the beadboard paneling right up to the chair rail Easy peasey. 😀

Loving your mix of spode and antlers!
View CommentDear Barb,
View Commentwhen I saw your picture and “new old buffet” I instantly knew those items were from The Bombay Co. I worked for them 20yrs. ago at South Coast Plaza in Orange county Calif. I have a blanket (hope style chest) that I’m thinking about repurposing as a coffee table. I will watch for your buffet restyling, a wonderful idea!
Love your room it feels so warm and huggy. I think any meal taken here would feel so special!
Thanks for your creativity……………….Susan
Hi Susan,
View CommentI worked for them for several years too in Colorado. I sure do miss that store. You can surely tell a Bombay piece from a mile away can’t you? 🙂
I have a blanket chest too we use as a toy chest for my grands. I am truly leaning towards painting it. 🙂 Thanks for your very sweet words and also for stopping by for a visit. ~ Barb
Love everything. Opinion about the buffet: I like the unpainted buffet, but not with that picture/frame. You have soft muted colors above and across the wall, and the buffet seems out of place. However, if your frame was darker, I think it would pull the eye to the whole area. Or a softer color on the buffet would also look good with the current picture/frame. I love those pheasants!
View CommentThanks for your insights. Definitely something to think about. Thanks for stopping by and leaving me such kind words and advice, too. ~Barb
View CommentYour Fall dining room buffet looks absolutely gorgeous! I love the soup tureen with pumpkins, and the pheasant figurines are the perfect Fall touch. I hope that you have a wonderful and blessed week!!!
View CommentThanks Shannon, it’s one of those things I will always have around in my decor. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by. ~Barb
View CommentJust very lovely Barb. Think that beadboard did just want you wanted it to do..helped the room become a little less formal. And I had to laugh as your design ‘style’ seems very much like mine…eclectic. I can’t chose just one style, or one color for that matter. I could never do the white farmhouse look!
thanks for the inspiration.
Have a great day.
