What do you think of when you hear Farmhouse?
Do you think of a century old home with a huge
front porch, white rockers and a kitchen herb garden?
Maybe you think of a farmhouse sink or a huge
farmhouse table,
or maybe old, wood plank floors with
a patina acquired only by time.
All of these touches are indeed
Farmhouse Style, but what I want to share
with you today are
10-Easy Farmhouse Style Tips.
My favorite decorating tips are those that can
be achieved relatively easy, with minimal effort,
but adds a big punch of design –
and, also, do not empty your wallet of greens.
Because, after all – we all still need to eat.
🙂
Here are 10- Easy Tips you can incorporate into
your home to add some Farmhouse Style…
1) Fresh Herbs
I love herbs of every shape and color. I love cooking
with them, making homemade soaps and lotions
with them, and I love decorating with them.
To me – a Farmhouse Kitchen isn’t complete without
herbs. Best of all, you can buy a few small pots at
the grocery store, very inexpensively, almost year round.
2) Paint Your Old, Worn-Out Cabinets
Okay, okay. I hear you.
Painting your cabinets is neither easy nor inexpensive.
Well, it is if you consider what it would cost to completely
replace all of them. And with fabulous products such as
Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paints, it has become a very
do-able DIY project.
3) Add Corbels for a More Custom Look
I found these corbels at Lowe’s for about $20 ea.
I simply painted them with my cabinetry paint,
and attached them to the wall.
I love how they look like they are an
extension of the cabinets.
Read more HERE.
4) Remove Some Cabinet Doors
This is something I contemplated doing for months.
After I did it, I questioned why I had waited so long.
It literally cost me nothing!
I used some wood putty to fill in the cabinet hardware
holes, and continued the backsplash to the back of the
newly, opened shelving for a cohesive look.
It created an instant focal point.
5) Add an Inexpensive Backsplash
Paneling.
Yep, the above pretty, painted-brick backsplash is paneling.
Unsightly sheets of 4×8 paneling I got at Lowes.
Unsightly paneling….meet Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
Here is more on how I achieved this
Faux Painted Brick Backsplash.
6) Chalkboards and Typography
I don’t know about you…but a home ain’t got
Farmhouse Style without some chalkboards
or typography. I created a focal point wall which
incorporated the two. The chalkboard paint was
applied directly to the wall and framed with
inexpensive moulding. The numbers on the blue cabinet
are basic, metal house numbers from Lowes.
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
7) Painted Furniture
Take one vintage Ethan Allen hutch I got on
Craigslist for $75.
Add some black paint.
Instant Farmhouse Style charm.
I love painted pieces. It doesn’t have to be black.
It can be any color. But, to me – painted pieces invoke
a memory of my own Mama painting some worn
pieces, rather than throwing them away and buying new.
8) Vintage & Flea Market Finds
I found this old, French-style basket at a flea market.
I knew it would be perfect in my home and serve
double-duty holding cookbooks.
Adding pieces you have lovingly rescued not only adds a
time-worn look to your home, it also allows you to
add your own personality – as you have specifically
chosen certain pieces because they spoke to you.
I have several of these
Farmhouse-style baskets throughout my home.
9) Create “Custom” Cabinets
This is another example of making your current
cabinets work for you. Once they were painted,
I decided that I wanted a “pull-out” basket for
kitchen linens. I measured the space and a
trip to Michael’s produced the perfect sized basket.
Then, I removed the cabinet drawer hardware and added
a simple plywood shelf, which I also painted.
It’s the perfect basket for holding my grain-sack towels.
(I have since added another basket drawer and I love it!)
10) Vignettes
What is a vignette?
There is an actual French meaning, but to me –
it means small, love-filled, design-laden areas which
showcase your style and love for your home.
With Farmhouse Style, vignettes usually incorporate
white dishes, typography, herbs or flowers and trays,
to name a few items. The best thing about vignettes
is that they can be easily changed.
See more of this Vignette HERE.
No matter what you feel Farmhouse Style is about…
when you add touches of your own decorating
personality you can’t go wrong.

Oh I’ve so wanted these for a very long time..I love your blog and I love the farmhouse style..I live in a small farm house (built in 1903) that was moved into the city limits of a very tiny town of less than 450 people..we’ve been working very hard to get this old house up to date it will take time..we are a DIY couple and your blog helps me find ideas and style I love to put in our home..I’m still purchasing furniture to paint and collect old things like paned doors to put back in our house..even found an old antique screen door from the 20’s with brass hardware but using it for the pantry door..I’ve turned one of my old paned doors into a chalkboard and hung on the big wall in my kitchen..kept the white creamy chippy paint just painted the panes and it’s amazing..have a great weekend and keep the fun coming..:)
