I love to volunteer at my Babies school.
I love to volunteer at my babies’ school. I am able to interact with my grandsons and be a help to the teacher. I also love that I develop a relationship with their classmates, many of whom they will grow up with. Last year, I volunteered in each of their classes once a week. In my older grandson’s class, I mostly helped once a week with grading papers and other administrative work to help the teacher get caught up. In Roo’s class, I read to them each week for “Story Time.” Now THAT was rewarding.
Why I Love to Volunteer at School
Each week, I would appear with two new books. The teacher sometimes suggested book titles he preferred to read, and other times he said “surprise us.” I loved this time with the kids. We gathered around on the “Reading Mats” and I had 23 little faces looking to me to take them on a new adventure, or bring a new character to life, or teach them about a new place. Being a history buff, I loved when I could share a story about the history of our Country whenever possible.
There is so much I received in return. First of all, seeing those little faces absorbed in a story and sharing my love of reading and books was incredible. Second of all, I was able to give the teacher a much needed break (not to mention he really enjoyed the Starbucks Caramel Macchiatos I would bring him).
A lot of people I talk to say they would like to volunteer but no-longer have school-aged children at home. That does not matter at all! Most schools welcome the extra hands to help out in the classroom and also in the lunchroom, so the teachers can enjoy their own lunches. All schools have different rules. For example, I had to have a background check and be fingerprinted at the local Sheriff’s Office.
If you have the spare time, please consider this worthy cause. Classes are getting so large in many schools that teachers really do need all of the help they can get. And I cannot imagine a better way of using your time than helping with the education of our children. Can you!
Speaking of another great cause, I am honored to help share another great program that you can participate in. It’s the Chase/AARP Foundation Drive To End Hunger Campaign. Together, Chase and the AARP Foundation are fighting hunger and putting food on the tables of Americans 50+. In 2016, Chase will donate $0.10 to AARP Foundation for every restaurant purchase made with your AARP® Credit Card from Chase—up to a total of $1.1 million. For more info about Chase, click HERE.
