DIY Laundry Room Cubby
By adding some minor changes to a standard store bought cubby, you can create a great rolling cart that can be used for additional storage and organizing in any room of the home.
Our laundry room has come a long way, baby.
My laundry room also has to serve as my pantry, so space is at a premium. A few years ago, we completely remodeled the out-of-date space and added as much functionality as we could. You know the ole’ saying “work with what you got?” That aptly applies to this space. This room has been a test of my organizing skills, which are limited at best. 🙂
I had in mind a small DIY project, and my oh-s0-sweet hubby offered to take it on for me. Here is our DIY Laundry Room Cubby.
Before I show you how easy this project was, let’s take a little journey back to where this room started. I will warn you, it’s not pretty. 😀
Here is our Laundry Room Before. (excuse the picture’s they were all I had at the time.)
A tiny pantry which you could barely reach into. Ratty cabinets which the previous owner had tried to “distress.” (they only thing they distressed me me. haha) And a tight, barely functional space.
One weekend while The Hubbs was off on a gold trip (that will teach him a lesson. LOL), my son and I took out the sledgehammer and went to work. I had had enough. We added a beadboard ceiling, beadboard walls: “How to Fake Expensive Molding“; Open Shelving for our Pantry: “Make Your Own Chalkboard Pantry Tags“; Storage Shelving: “Building a Large Shelf on a Budget“; and, a new Samsung Washer and Dryer. In the end, it wasn’t my dream laundry room, but it was a LOT better.
So let’s get back to the DIY project which brought you here. 🙂
I had a space between the stack washer/dryer unit and the wall. When space is at a premium, one must think outside the box to utilize every square inch. I went online and found this Laundry Cart and this Laundry Unit, but it wasn’t what neither the look or functionality that I wanted or needed.
So, I sent The Hubbs to Lowe’s with a list and he purchased one of these cubbies from Closet Maid.
He also purchased four small castors. After a few “wirty dords” putting the cubby together (haha!), he turned it on its long side and added a castor in each corner.
I chose storage baskets similar to these, because they looked best with our laundry room.
And here is our DIY Laundry Room Cubby on Wheels…
I love it. It fits perfectly between the washer/dryer and the wall, and I can roll it away when not being used.
We had a spare handle in our “Flip House Leftovers” bin, so we added it as an easy way to pull the cubby out. It also doubles as a convenient hand-cloth hanger.
I have a small wire basket which stays on top which gives me easy access to the items I need most.
Otherwise, I have everything accessible in one of the storage cubby baskets.
I even dedicated one to a trash bin for lint, etc., where I added a trash liner.
When I originally thought of this idea, it was for extra storage space. But, once it was out together and put into place, I figured out it created something very handy which I was without.
A handy folding table. It was just enough space to allow me to stack clothes and linens on as I fold.
That tickled me to death. What a fabulous feature I had not planned on. Altogether, we spent about $100 on this project, maybe a little less.
This is how it looks when it is tucked in. It goes back further against the back wall, but I kinda like the looks of it showing like this. Do you see my Laundry Room artwork above the cubby?
I made the ” Clothespin Canvas” art by simply gluing old-fashioned clothespins to a painted canvas. So easy. I also created a custom “Busy Bee Laundry Company” Printable which I framed in a Dollar Store frame.
If you would like to have this Laundry Room Printable, too, I am offering it for FREE and you can get it here.

So there you have it… my DIY Laundry Room Cubby. I think this project is versatile enough that it could be used in almost any laundry room or any other space, too. How about a craft room or a kid’s play room? Add a larger top to create a small work/play space.
Where could you use this DIY Rolling Cubby?
Thanks for letting me share….

Perfect. Looks great and everything is tucked away so neat and tidy. No visible clutter for guests to see. Great job.

What an inspiration – I love your laundry room! And thank you so much for the adorable printable. I think I have time this weekend to re-do mine. It’s such a depressing site and needs a major overhall. I do have a cubby that fits in a small space there, but it could use some love and maybe casters too! 🙂 Thank you for sharing.
