I absolutely love that we have a fireplace in our Dining Room.
Our Dining Room wasn’t always our Dining Room. It started out as a Living Room when we first bought our home. But after a large Family Room addition, we turned our once formal Living Room area into a formal Dining Room. And the fireplace stayed. Of course. 🙂 I was perfectly happy with that.
The mantel in our Dining Room is usually the first area I decorate for almost every holiday or season. It sets the mood for the remainder of the home. It is a large focal point when you come through the front door as this room is directly in front of the foyer. I present The Everyday Home’s Festive and Plaid Christmas Mantel.
…………………………………………………….
Before we start the tour, I am so happy to share that I am taking part in a Christmas Mantels Around America Blog Hop hosted by my dear friend, Suzie with Worthing Court.
You will see some amazingly spectacular Christmas Mantels today, and I am so honored to be part of this amazing group of bloggers. Please follow to the end so you can see all of the participants.
…………………………………………………………..
This year, I was feeling extremely stressed and uninspired when it came to our Christmas decor. I had zero expectations as to what our Christmas decorations would look like. I knew I would be staying with my “Mad for Plaid” theme, but other than that – I had no clue and no idea what direction to go in. And then, I spotted these lovelies and my mind was awhirl.
Red, mercury glass candlesticks. Be still my heart! I knew they would be the perfect accompaniment to my mercury glass lamps which flank each side of the mantel. I needed some pop! Our newly redesigned Mantel is large and rustic. It called for something that spoke volumes and said “Christmas has arrived!” These red candlesticks don’t just say it, they shout it. 🙂
This year, I stayed with two ribbon designs for the bows. A pretty and traditional red and green plaid, and a red and white snowflake pattern. I thought the snowflake design harmonized with the icy branches and snow-covered berries.
Do you spot my new plaid ornaments below?
I saw these ornaments in Hobby Lobby and could not get them into my cart fast enough. I only used four of them, but they could not be more perfect. Now I wish I had purchased more. 🙂
I also crafted some new sweater stockings.
Okay, not 100% crafted, but I did dress them up some, and have one more addition to add to them. I will share this easy project soon.
Three stockings for three precious Grandloves.
“Buck,” my friendly deer, was dressed in a Christmas wreath of snowy branches, red berries and a plaid bow. He seems quite pleased to be dressed so festive.
Look at that smile on his cute face. 🙂
This year’s mantel may be one of the most festive I have ever created. It definitely has more sparkle and bling than I have ever used. But, I love the juxtaposition of the dark, rustic wood mantel and the shimmering mercury glass, don’t you?
On the hearth, I kept it simple, because when you have a mantel as mirthful and brimming as this one, you need to calm things down a bit.
A burlap-lined, wire basket is filled with birchwood logs, greenery and berries. And on the opposite end…
…. small wrapped packages and a sweater tree nestle together.
This mantel is completely different than our 2015 Christmas Mantel. It definitely is not an example of understated or moderation. Ha! But, it is full of everything joyful and cheerful and plaid and well….Christmas.
The favorite part of my day is when the sun sets and night comes to call and I can turn on all the Christmas lights…
The Dining Room takes on a different look and feel, as does the mantel.
No lamps are needed. Just the soft glow of the white lights reflecting into the room – casting a glimmering effect onto the table set with more plaid and red, mercury candlesticks to tie everything all together.
So, while I may not have had any idea whatsoever of what direction our Christmas decor would go, I sure am happy with where it ended up. Red and White. Plaid. Sparkly. Happy. And Festive.

Christmas means literally the Mass of CHRIST. Where is the Baby Jesus in your house? Why wouldn’t you put pics of HIM in your collection. He is in my house. I am SO glad and thankful God sent him. (Don’t know don’t care if it was originally ”Dec 25th’…He CAME). I have nativity sets, pics of nativity sets, angels all through out my house. I am Proud of that. YOU should be too. Many many nations have Taken that away. Sweden now has banned All Christmas Lights….(they SAY it is Safety) but that has Never been an issue before…Everyone KNOWS it is because they let ALL those Muslims in….I will unfollow you. It is so sad and hard for me to understand how folks can just Pretend by Omission that Christmas is about Santa, snowmen, reindeers, holly, trees, etc. IT. IS. HUMANS. CELEBRATION. OF. THE. GIFT. OF JESUS CHRIST COME DOWN TO EARTH. He was born and died that all who believe and repented of their sins would have eternal life. I am not saying all the things you had in your house was not pretty – they are…but not ONE pic of Jesus the Baby…wow….so long…

How sad, that as a Christian, you can so easily judge me and my family from a few images on a blog. You do not know my heart or my relationship with my Jesus Christ. You should be very proud of your home and how you pay homage to the Lord and your faith, but I would never judge someone who prefers a simple nativity (which I have set up for my grandchildren.) Christmas is about everything, because it’s a happy and joyous time when all hearts are open to love and forgiveness and the power of the birth of our Savior. I don’t want my grandchildren to grow up thinking that collecting and displaying a myriad of pictures and statues is what makes one Godly. Rather, I choose to show them how human kindness and generosity, like collecting Winter coats and baking cookies to take to the local Old Age Home, is what God truly intended for us. One does not have to have commercially produced nativities and pictures of nativities within their home to know the love and mercy of Our Father. That, my friend, is what is stored in your heart and how you treat and respect others. Merry Christmas, and thank you for coming to my home for a visit. You are welcome here anytime.

You would have a very hard time getting me out of this festive room upon my entrance into your home. It is so inviting and cozy. Red is my favorite color and I like your mercury glass, berries, pillow, and stockings along with the other two traditional colors of white and green. “Buck” is so handsome, dressed in His finery.

I too love your mantel creation. If I didn’t have a big wood stove pipe that goes over my mantel I could envision doing something like yours.
Lovely, elegant and very festive.
