Welcome to Metamorphosis Monday, hosted by
Susan at Between Naps on the Porch.
Please make sure you stop by this weekly blog event to see all the wonderful “Before and After” pics.
I will start by saying that I have thoroughly enjoyed the Holidays in more ways than one. Aside from the fact that my beautiful family was all together this year, and – besides the fact that I went on a wild Christmas decorating binge *smile* – I have had some spare time to blog and welcome you into my home, and share some of my projects with you.
That said – today was the “official” last day of my extended vacation period. Tomorrow …it is back to work in full force. Back to reality. So…my blogging may be sporadic…again! sigh!
I just wanted to say thank you for all the lovely visits and comments I have received over the past few weeks. It means a lot to me.
This week, I am sharing my Guest Bathroom Makeover.
This past year, we had travertine marble installed. Love it!
A coordinating tile surrounds the edge of the bathroom.
Previously, it was painted “Wet Concrete” by Ben Moore. I really am not a “purple” person per say, but to me this is one of the prettiest Ben Moore colors available. (but what a horrid name! )
I found the large silver mirror at Ross 5 yrs ago when we first moved into this house. I could not face another contractor-grade “slab-o-mirror” again. Because there were a few small nicks in the frame of this mirror, I was able to purchase this beauty for about $50. I knew no matter what the color scheme was, I wanted to keep silver, and this mirror, in the design profile.
Technically, there wasn’t anything really wrong with the bathroom. It wasn’t exactly a major eyesore.
Mr. Grits said it was a project that could wait, because there were other more pressing issues. (like his deck maybe? ) “rolling eyes here*
No matter, I started planning and working on some of the ideas that were running through my head…
I created a few mini mock-ups with fabrics and colors….
But alas, Mr Grits said “nit!” He jokingly said…
“If you can re-do this bathroom for $100 or less, you can do it.”
Silly, silly man…..
“Ninny, ninny, poo poo –
I will show you what I can do!”
Now before I show you the “After”…I will say this project was a testament to the power of bartering.
Me and my handyman struck up a little deal. I would manage his property free for 3 months, if he supplied the labor and I supplied the materials. Done!
The “After”….
Chocolate Brown with Crisp White Wainscoting
The magic of moulding….
Love the “beefy” chair rail….
Chocolate Paint $27
White Paint (already had)
Mouldings $48
This was one of my fave projects….with 3 yards of clearance rack fabric ($12) and a roll of ribbon ($3)…I created this “No-Sew” window treatment in about 5 minutes.
You can’t really see the true color, but its a gorgeous grey-sage embroidered silk. Yum!
With the basics of the room in place, it was time to accessorize….
“Home Shopping: 101”
I had a white over-the-toilet shelf which I really never liked. So, we cut off the bottom part and my hubby added hardware on the back to allow it to hang. So much better!
Small touches “borrowed” from here and there throughout my home. The little silver bird was a recent $4 purchase at Ross.
(wish I had bought more, I can see a sweet little tablescape themed around this little guy.)
I removed two prints from these frames above, then painted them white. I rubbed the edges to give them a slight aged effect. The bird prints with burlap mats were taken out of other frames. I bought two $4 sage green mats. I love the burlap mats and was glad I was able to use them.
You know how I love to add “bling” with scrapbooking stick-on gems and jewels. I dug through my box and decided on these…
A single sage-colored jewel fancies up a candle…
More stick-on gems decorate a plain white shade….
A vintage silver tray holds a white porcelain sugar and creamer with silver trim for cotton balls and q-tips, and a glass soap dish.
…even the mini gems look great when used on the border of the shade.
Silk hydrangea blooms fill a crystal, Waterford pitcher.
Brown and white transferware plates …
A silver, petit four stand holds seashells collected on a family vacation to Sanibel Island.
A view looking into the mirror….
A small $1 Michael’s silver frame and a hand-written message…
Total expenditure…. $102
(shhhh….Mr Grits does not need to know I was $2 over budget) *wink*
I hope you enjoyed seeing my “$100” guest bathroom makeover. I am sure some accessories will change along the way, as I see the perfect little “this” and the ideal little “that” which better suits this space…but for now…I am very pleased with the outcome.
Please make sure you visit Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for more “Before and After” projects on Met Monday.
I am also joining Mary at Little Red House for Mosaic Monday,
as well as, Thrifty Decor Chic and
and Beth at Gypsy Fish Journal for her Silver Sunday Blog Party.
Have a Great Week, Dear Friends….
Blessings, Barb

You, my dear, are a very smart cookie! I love your bathroom! Like Mr. Grits, I was not offended by the “before” but this is something special! I have never seen wainscoting in a bathroom that I can remember. Love the shade fabric and the shells on the dessert stand! ps–the house in my post is not really my taste–good thing at 3.5 🙂

Hello: I absolutely loved your bathroom…every detail. I want to copy a couple like the shutters. Oh I want to go shopping. I have a mirror similar to yours. It started out as a wedding present 39 years ago with gold hoosits on the outside of it. We took them off and my husband banded the mirror in wood molding. We painted ours a dark brown. It looks brand new and we love it. Thanks for sharing. Valerie
