Yay or Nay Thursday #8

I just have to say that I love
Yay or Nay Thursday!

I love that weeks later, out of the blue, I will get a late comer sharing his/her opinion on an older subject.  I LOVE that.

Thank you to everyone who responds and
shares and participates.  I enjoy reading them
all. And it also tells me that you enjoy
this series.

Speaking of sharing your thoughts and participating… I have a fun event that I share
on my Facebook page that runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  It’s called
“What I Like/What I Don’t Like.”  I post the same picture of a design or project twice a day.  The first posting is when you can share “What I Like” opinions, and the second posting, later in the day, is when you can share “What I Don’t Like” thoughts.

For example, here is the most recent picture I shared.

(source)
If you’re like the rest of us, there are many aspects you like..and a few aspects – not so much.  🙂

It’s fun to read everyone’s thoughts and see how closely related other’s opinions are to yours – or not.   🙂

You can follow me on Facebook HERE.  I’d love to have you join us for this fun event.

Last week… I asked you about Open Shelving in the Kitchen.

(source)

Most of you agreed that it was a beautiful look.  Some loved the look but said you could never have it in your own kitchen because you had
way too much “stuff.”
(Like my Disney World plates and Sea World Sippies.)

Others said you already had open shelving and loved it.

Editor’s Note: I am still undecided what I want to do.  🙂

So – what do I have in store for you this week?
See if you can guess…

Did you guess yet?
Do you see the common factor in all
of these pictures?

Here is a picture from my own kitchen…

From Christmas 2009 …
And again most recently, after the cabinets were painted and the backsplash received a Faux Brick Finish…

Now does it make sense?

This week’s Yay or Nay Thursday is this…

 Magnetic Knife Strips.

When my oldest grandson came to live with
us while our son and DIL were both deployed
to Iraq, he loved to be in the kitchen with me while I cooked.  It soon became apparent that having my knives in a drawer within his reach
was not going to work.

Then, my sweet Mama gave me a very nice
set of these…

A set of German Wusthof knives.  Love!
God bless her.  🙂

But, I have to be honest. I am not a fan of this look.

Maybe if I had switched the holder to something more along the look of this…
(source)
(Fits right in with a Country Kitchen, huh?)   heehee

Or this…

(source)   ….if you really want it!  :-O

Um, say what???

Or maybe even this….

(source)
Ummm, what is wrong with these people?  🙂

No, instead I went with a simple magnet strip
on each side of my sink.  I hand wash my
knives.  They never go into the dishwasher.
This magnet makes it very handy to put
them away after I have washed and dried them.

I also love that I can easily access the knife
I need in one quick grab.  As a major foodie
who loves to spend her afternoon chopping and mincing and slicing and dicing…I like things within easy range.

I have also read that a magnet strip is
“healthier” for your knives as they tend to
become less dull, compared to when they
are stored in a wood block.

Now if I had my dream kitchen, I would have one of these…

(source)
(source)

Sigh!

But, until I get my Dream Kitchen – I will
still use my magnet strips. Even though I
get an occasional email telling me how much prettier my kitchen would be if I didn’t have
 the knife strips.   🙁

Oh well, can’t please everyone huh?  🙂

So, now its your turn.  Yay or Nay to the look
of Magnetic Knife Strips.  You can be honest,
it won’t hurt my feelings.  If I get too many
Nay’s and change my mind about using them
for my knives, I can always use them for this…

(source)

BRILLIANT!

Or maybe this…

(source)
So cute!

Or maybe even this…

(source)

Ok…take it away!

Hope you’re having a fabulous and blessed week.

Yay! I do not have a lot of counter space in my small kitchen. And, even if I did have space for my knives in a drawer, which I don’t, I just don’t like knives stored in drawers. Right now I have two knife blocks, and I’m looking for the right knife magnet. I have no problems with my knives being out on display, because I have a pegboard that displays all my pots and pans. When you have a small kitchen with very limited storage space, you have to get creative!

BTW, do you like the knife magnet you have? I was looking at that one, but I read reviews that it nicked the edge of the blades.

I’m afraid that I’m in the nay camp on this one. They look scary to me and I’m afraid that one of my grands would be too tempted to grab one as they’re climbing up on the counter to get to some thing or other out of a cabinet. I’m not a person who spends a lot of time cooking, but even though I don’t care for the look, I can appreciate how much easier it makes the life of someone who does.

Sorry to say, but I’m a Nay. I do have a small Wusthof block on my counter that holds 3 knives & a scissors. I downsized from the large block. And then I put all of my knives in dividers in a drawer. Not the pretty wooden one above, just stainless steel drawer baskets. I’m trying to de-clutter my countertops. (For me, the knives hanging on the wall is too horror-movie-ish…but that’s just my very small, and quite insignificant, opionion.)

Nay for me, too. Sorry. I think it looks okay in a very industrial style kitchen. I am lucky enough to have built a drawer in below my microwave just for knives (oh and my can opener). I do think your strip is probably convenient though-xo Diana

I just discovered your blog! I am happy I did. I would have to say NAY, kind of scary. I have to say I do like the knife holders you pictured. Wouldn’t use one of those either, not enough counter space.
