Winter: /wintər/
:the coldest season of the year, in the northern hemisphere from
December to February and in the southern hemisphere from
June to August.
Ya’ think?
It should also say it’s the season of the year when you have
absolutely NO idea how to decorate your home.
The Christmas decor has been packed away.
Tables and mantels look barren.
Sparkly white lights have been turned off.
Yet outside, the weather outside is frightening.
But fear not, my Everyday Friends.
Mr. Buck gave me some great ideas to create a
Warm and Cozy Winter Mantel.
He suggested I create a look that coordinated with his
favorite black and white wool scarf.
Then…he also suggested that I add some fun Chalkboard Printables
and share them with you at the end of this post.
Smart fella!
So – I added the printable from last week’s post where I shared
my Winter Foyer Vignette.
“Baby it’s Cold Outside!”
Next, I added some simple snowflake printables, again on a
Chalkboard background.
I mounted these on black foam core to give them some body.
You could easily frame these if you had some thrift store
frames lying around.
Next…I added some icy and snow-tipped greenery…
A few flocked pinecones and more *mini snowflakes I had
leftover from last week’s project were also added.
*(Dollar Store finds.)
Underneath the greenery, I added some white lights from my
Christmas decor.
It’s not Christmas, but I still love some sparkling white lights
this time of year.
This is how my mantel looks at night…
Isn’t this warm and cozy and Oh-So-Wintry?
I have to give thanks to Mr. Buck for guiding me along.
Maybe I should re-name him Monsieur Jacques Buck,
Designer Extraordinaire.
Here is a breakdown of how I achieved this look:
1) Lay a string of white lights on mantel.
2) Layer with lots of greenery.
3) Add pinecones, snowflakes, flocked stems, etc, that
invoke a Wintry feel.
4) Anchor each end of the mantel with small trees or you can
use tall Winter twigs.
5) In place of Mr Buck, use a large grapevine wreath
spray painted white. Add a winter scarf and some mittens or fun.
6) Add some printables.
Cost:
– About $2 for color copies on cardstock from Staples
– $5 for large sheet of black foam core
*( I used my 40% off coupon)
– The remainder of the items I used were leftover from my
Christmas decor.
Even if you do not have a mantel, you can still use this
same idea on top of a buffet, shelf or chest.
How about adding a
No-Sew Sweater-Covered Lampshade
– or create a Lighted Winter Dough Bowl.
Here are the Printables I used.
Please feel free to download and use them.

I adore these printables, Barb! I’m ready to work on my own wintry scenes, and who knows, I may have to incorporate your printables! Love them.

I love the printables! I clicked over to look at the pictures thinking you had painted snowflakes on chalkboard. Your printables are so much easier!

Thanks, glad you like them. 🙂

Hi Barb, I’m a year late but just found this great display. It is so pretty, and I’m kind of a decorating novice, but I think I can manage it. I would love to try these chalkboard prints, but I need a little more guidance. Don’t laugh! First: color copies at Staples? Do you mean of the Printables? Aren’t they black and white? *feeling pretty dumb here…* Second: I don’t quite get the black foam core. Do you cut the letters out and apply them to the foam? (Actually, go ahead and laugh!) Thanks for this great idea and any help… I look forward to some fun creating!

Hi – I am more than happy to answer any questions you have. First, I say color because it is the best way to get the vhalkboard affect to really show through. I know it sounds silly, but the black and white is more dull and less real looking. I just cut the black foam core to the size of the print. Lets say you had Staples make you an 8×10 size print. Trim the edges of any extra white around the sides of the print, then cut your black foam core to that same size as the trimmed print. Make sense? 🙂 Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. 🙂

Barb, I am so glad Julie asked a few questions. I feel like she and I might be about the same age. Sometimes my kids tease me in that I am dangerous on the computer. Know if enough to get me in trouble lol. But my questions is. When I click on the printables the show up with a black background, they are very cute…but won’t that print off when i print them. I prefer to take them to staples but how does one do that. Do you download them somehow. Sorry but I so want to learn, thanks

Hi Sheryl – they were made with a black background and made to look like a chalkboard. The reason I say have them made as a color print is because the chalkboard background will show up much better, rather than a black and white copy. I know it sounds strange but I tried it both ways. Hope this helps. 🙂

Barb maybe I wasn’t clear enough in my question. I need to know how do I get them to the store to be printed. I LOVE chalkboards and love the way you did these. If I printed them on my printer I am afraid I would use all my black ink. I really think they would look great in helping me decorate my home here in MI as I am sure we aren’t done with our cold snowy weather. So my question getting them printed, can you tell me how?
