Lichen and Moss Covered Balls

I am Wild About Mother Nature!
I am crazy for moss and twigs and lichen and grapevine. 
So I thought it would be fun to share a project I have had in mind for a few
weeks and finally got around to.

I need to say that this craft project became more than I expected.
Yesterday afternoon, I readied the kitchen table with a sheet of brown paper,
hot glue, scissors, mosses, burlap, and assorted spheres.
 
My son and daughter-in-law and Grandloves were over for dinner. I asked
my daughter-in-law if she wanted to help me craft some moss balls.
She was very excited, and we jumped in together – along with some valuable 
assistance from the Babies.  🙂
What started out as an afternoon of crafting turned into some pretty amazing 
Mother-in-Law/Daughter-in-Law time. 
 
 About halfway through she said, “Mom, we should do this at least once a month.
I love this.” I promise her that we would definitely have more craft time together.
I love that my love of all things Mother Nature soon became her love, too. We made
lots extra and she took some home with her.
 
We decided we wanted to make some standard moss covered balls, and some not-so
standard ones, too. I love how they all turned out.

We named this “Chia Ball” because it looked so fuzzy.  
This one was covered with reindeer moss.

For this one, we simply tucked bits of green reindeer moss into
the crevices of a grapevine ball.

We used 4 different mosses for this ball.  I love all of the textures and colors.

In my new white tray from Pier 1, of course.
{  I realized I also have a thing for trays, too.  😀  }

I placed the tray on my chippy, metal and glass coffee table, 
which is located in my newly painted formal Living Room. 
 
I added these little cuties to my vignette along with some vintage 
books.

Then, I simply started layering the moss balls in the tray, large ones first…

I added in some of these smaller balls I already had…


We even wrapped a few with leftover strands of burlap threads.

I topped the arrangement with a bird’s nest made of pine straw which
I discovered a few weeks ago while I was cleaning out a window box.
 I wish you could see and feel how tightly compacted and “well-constructed”

I thought the tray was missing something…and I hurried outside

because I knew just what I wanted to add. 

Large pieces of tree bark were the perfect final touch placed around

the edge of the tray.

… a beautiful piece of twig with lichen growing on it.  I heart this!

So that completes my Moss and Lichen Tray.

I love the juxtaposition of the china Staffordshire dogs, the glass and metal
coffee table, the wood tray – and the earthy effect of the balls, bark and twig.
 
So now I have a little secret to share.  Wanna know what we used for the balls?
If you have ever priced styrofoam balls you know very well how $$$ they are.
 
So, we used these…

 Yep. Plastic play pit balls from the Dollar Store.  
Where there is a will there is a way.   😀
These cost only a small portion of what it would cost to buy
styro balls, plus the Babies had extra balls to play with, or scatter
throughout the house.  Ha!

    Your moss project came out fantastic, especially when the project is shared with people you love. I am so happy that your daughter-in-law so enjoyed being able to create this beautiful project with you, not to mention your grand loves too.. You definitely created both a beautiful vignette and beautiful memories as well.

    Those moss orbs came out sooo beautiful. A true project that even “Mother Nature” would be proud of!!

    Hi, I just found your fun blog. I too am a lover of anything that ha to do with nature. I especially love reindeer moss in that limey green color. I think that your balls turned out awesome! I have a red tray on my ottoman in my family room. Right now it holds magazines, but I think I hear it begging for moss balls. lol! Oh, and let’s not forget the burlap. I have burlap draperies hanging at the window. I think they are destined for this room. Thanks for the party and I am now a new follower.

    Love your tray and the moss and burlap balls. Now you’ve got me back on the moss track. I love moss to and put some in post, but need some dried moss for balls. Thanks for the neat natural ideas.
