KD at Southern Whimsy is hosting “Themed Thursday.” If you have not been to her blog, you are missing out. Please visit KD’s blog to see a full list of all participants in “Themed Thursday.”
This week’s theme is Blue Transferware. Love it!
So…off we go!
I have a fairly large collection of blue and white. Most of my pieces were collected during my many “flea” trips across Britian and the UK. Some pieces were inherited from my husband’s late mother, who also loved transferware of all colors. They spent three years in England as a Navy family.
My collection is showcased in my Morning Room. This is one of my favorite rooms in our home. It’s where I head to in the morning, coffee in hand, to enjoy some quiet before the baby awakes and the day begins. If I am lucky, I am visited by my family of deers – eating their morning fill.
The room is painted Laura Ashley Cherry. I love the crisp white paneling effect against the red.
(for those who have seen this room already…no, I still don’t have my drapes and cornices) :-/
This is the inside of my antique English hutch. Along with the blue and white dishes, I have antique books, more Victorian crystal creamers, and a few miscellaneous crystal or glass items.
This is a close-up of one of the shelves. Here you can see some of the old books I have amassed. Do you know what those two small glass items in the front center are? No? They are Victorian eye cups, used to wash ladies eyes because the coal and other chemicals from their make-up would irritate their eyes. (even then…women paid a price for beauty, huh?)
The center plate is one of my favorites, from Bavaria. I wish the pictures showed just how beautiful this plate really is.
The plate featuring the collection of teapots was one of my first purchases on our first visit to London.
One of my favorite and most visited flea markets was Tongeren, Belgium. We would wake at 4am to make the 1 hour drive and get there with flashlights, because some of the best deals were made while the trucks were being unloaded. I discovered my first piece of “Liberty Blue” transferware, made in England, at this market. I was far away from my homeland…and my heart skipped a beat when I saw this piece.
I asked the dealer if he had more, and he said one more…and brought out this platter…
Love these doggies! My kitties think they are quite offensive! 🙂
This is the cover to a cheese tray. Yes, I have the bottom … somewhere … in my garage.
This is the teacup set I used for my Tablescape “Dinner for One.”
I love the chintz rose saucer …. it is simply stamped “Made in England.”
I could show you more….but you need to go see all the other Blue Transferware posts for “Themed Thursday.”
I hope you enjoyed seeing my Morning Room “close up.” Thanks KD for sponsoring this event.
May the Only “Blue” in Your Days Be Dishes…Barb

Wow, what an amazing collection you have, Barb! I don’t have any blue & white transferware, that’s why I’m not playing in today’s blog party. ;o)
Love the dogs & the rose chintz saucer (it’s Blue Peony by Churchill…I recognized it because I have it in red).

Just found your blog. OMG it is wonderful.Love kitties and I also have a lovely Lilly cat. Love, Love blue and white transfer ware and have a very few pieces. Loved living in England for 3 years but was very poor (military) so was not able to purchase the wonderful things you did. I also love living in North Carolina in the Piedmont area. I know I will visit your blog on a daily basis. I have toyed with the idea of painting my dining room red like your morning room. Your grandson is special and you are so special to care for him while the parents are gone. Looking forward to reading your blog.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful blue/white transfer ware! I have a lunch-serving set of Blue Mikado (Royal Crown Derby) that was handed down to me by my Great Grandmother that I just love! The thing is, it’s packed away in the attic because I don’t have anywhere to display it. But if I had visited your siter earlier this week I would have dragged the box down and set the table just so I could share!! Maybe next time. 🙂

Barb, thank you for this great post! I am researching ideas for putting plates on my family room wall, and your ideas have been most helpful! I love blue and white transferware and have collected the Liberty Blue set. It’s nice to find ways to display it. My first piece of this set came from the supermarket when I was a teen. Remember the days when we could get a plate with $25.00 of dishes? Mom, sis, and I each got a set of plates this way — and ebay helped me fill out the set 30 years later.
🙂 Thank you!

Hello Barb! You have a beautiful home! I haven’t had the pleasure to peruse it’s entirety yet, but I am working on it! Love the “English Manor” feel of this room and all that beautiful blue transferware. I am happy for you that your “babies” are returning home afer their service. No need to say how proud you are of them. I bet it will be a wonderful homecoming. 🙂 Enjoy your trip! ~ Laurie
