Turkey Pot Pie.
About as American as Apple Pie.
A flaky crust with a creamy filling of turkey and vegetables
and a creamy sauce.
Oh my!
Turkey Pot Pie happened to be one of the requests when
my son was coming home from his first Iraq deployment.
Now, I can’t help but feel some emotional attachment to
this dish whenever I see it or serve it.
I am sharing this story as part of the
Comforts From Home by Marie Callender’s.
Turkey Pot Pie with Bacon and Cheddar
……………………………………
I have spoken some about my son, an Army Vet, several times
- but never how hard it was to send our only child off to war.
I can’t explain the long, long nights of sitting in the dark, crying,
worrying, praying – because we had not heard from him in several
days and the news was full of horrible events taking place.
Thanks to the Good Lord, he made it thru the first 18-month
deployment, made it thru the second 18-month deployment,
and although he was injured during the third 18-month deployment –
we were blessed it was not as bad as it could have been.
I can’t tell you how his service time changed me.
As the wife of a retired Marine, I had been around the military life for
years – but nothing prepared me for my son being in war.
I suddenly realized the fear and panic and hopelessness that every wife
and mother must have experienced from the Revolutionary War to present.
I am proud of him for his service to Country.
I can’t put into words the daily struggles he has with his PTSD.
(Don’t even get me going on the Veteran’s Administration.)
I am also very proud of my daughter-in-law, who today has
horrible migraines and back pain from a head injury she suffered
during her second deployment to Iraq.
When my son was weeks away from his first deployment ending,
we Skyped and he gave me a list of foods he wanted me to
fix for him when he got home on leave.
My Spaghetti and Meatballs and Venison Chili were just a few.
Then, he wanted my Turkey Pot Pie Casserole.
I promise to share that recipe soon.
When I saw that Marie Callender’s was bringing back their
“Comforts of Home” campaign to help out US Service Men and Women,
I really wanted to be a part of it. I also thought it was ironic that
the Turkey Pot Pie was one of the dishes which was part of this program.
To help bring the “Comforts of Home” to our deserving and brave service
men and women, specially marked packages of Marie Callender’s meals
and desserts encourage consumers to go online to http://clvr.li/1Ga3OXC
and enter a code you can find on the back of the participating meal’s box.
Marie Callender’s will make a $.50 donation to the
USO Operation Celebration
program for each code entered, up to $300,000.
From September 1, 2015 through January 29, 2016, consumers can help give
to the USO Operation Celebration program. I can’t think of a better
way to give back, can you?
Last year, with consumers’ overwhelming support, Marie Callender’s
brought care packages to a very deserving group of servicemen and
women stationed overseas through a $250,000 donation to the
USO2GO program.
