Comment on Are you ready for Christmas…and a giveaway! by Lisa S..
I have so many Christmas traditions, it’s hard to choose just one. After all, it’s my favorite time of year! I guess the one that I like the most, because it means the most, is a tradition we started with our son when he was little.
We have a manger scene that we set out every year. Long ago, I cut straw into pieces about 4″ long and put them in a bag next to the manger. During the whole Christmas season, we sneak around doing extra good deeds for one another. We may sneak in and make someone’s bed before they do, or dry the dishes without being asked. Any number of things like that. When you do a good deed, you put a straw in the manger. The goal is to have as much straw (good deeds) in the manger by Christmas so Baby Jesus is not cold on Christmas Eve. When you do a good deed, you don’t tell anyone. This is to teach the children that you do things for others without expecting recognition for it.
Now our son is nearly 30 years old and my husband and I are empty nesters. We still do this tradition each year, just my husband and I. We now have our first Grandchild, who is 19 months old, and I plan on sharing this tradition with him, as well, when he is old enough. Merry Christmas!
