Two Grandbabies in School.
Two!
My sweet Roo started kindergarten this year.
That gets me right in the heart to think about it.
It also makes me feel old.
As in real old.
I wanted to share a sweet little story about the
first day of school.
Roo’s First Day of Kindergarten
If you have been following me here for any amount
of time, you know without a doubt how much I
love my three grandbabies.
I call them my Grandloves, and they are my
three little heartbeats.
My middle grandson, Devin, who we call “Roo” –
has stayed with me almost full-time during the day for
several years, just like his brother did at this age.
I was a basket case when Cole started school,
so I was a double basket case when Roo started school.
Lord knows what I will be like when Caity starts in two years.
😀
The morning of the first day last week, we all gathered outside the
school. I had made him a “First Day” sign just like I did
for Cole for his First Day of 3rd Grade.
He was so excited.
That is… until he got inside and sat down at his seat.
Then, I think it hit him what was actually happening.
I was doing everything I could to hold it together,
trying to prove outwardly how happy I was for him.
And I was happy.
I was happy for this sweet child and this next step in life
that he was embarking on.
But, in my heart, I knew from this day forward,
he would never be truly all ours again.
He would be shared with friends, and teachers, and people
within the school who would be there to help him
along his journey.
I stood over to the side, and I won’t lie…
my eyes were teary.
But I smiled.
I smiled with as much reassurance and “you got this, baby!”
attitude as I could muster.
But, inside, this Grammy’s heart was breaking.
I would miss him at home.
I would miss our afternoon Sonic Ice Cream runs. 🙂
I saw him look over at me, and he got up from his chair
and came over to where I was standing with
his Mama and Daddy. He wrapped his little arms around
my legs and he said…
“Grammy, you’re gonna be okay. It won’t be so bad.”
He was assuring ME!
I leaned down at his level and said –
“It sure will and you are gonna be awesome.”
(I remember just a short time ago he was saying “awshum.”)
And I know he will.
He will thrive and grow and he will love it.
Because I know in many, many ways we are very blessed.
Our local schools are small.
Most of the teachers at my grandson’s school graduated
from this same school system.
I feel safe knowing my babies are there, and I am also at ease
that they are in loving, caring hands.
The moment you walk into the front doors, the teachers are
there greeting the students and parents with smiling faces.
But what I love most, is they still say
The Pledge of Allegiance over the intercom.
For a Marine Wife and an Army Mom,
that makes me so proud.
Just before we left, Roo’s teacher came over to me.
My son and daughter-in-law had already said their good-bye’s
and I was lingering for a few extra moments, just to take it in.
To silently say “goodbye, my sweet little man.”
His teacher touched my arm and said…
“I don’t know if you’re interested, but this classroom
sure could use a Grammy. You’re welcome anytime.”
In that moment, that young kindergarten teacher
won me over! I made one last silly face at Roo,
and waved good-bye. And went home to a very,
very quiet house.
😀

I shared another Family-Friendly Chicken Recipe last week
using Tyson’s All-Natural Chicken Nuggets.
Mexi-Cheesy Chicken and Rice Skillet
The simple preparation and crispy texture of the nuggets
made them perfect for this dish.
