Essential Oils and Emotions
When my emotions get the better of me, I have an arsenal of tools to help. Let’s discuss one of those tools: Essential Oils and Emotions. Aroma can bring back memories and help stir up feelings. Essential oils are one way to not only enjoy a pleasant smell, but emerge a calmer, more joyful person when stormy emotions threaten. Why be angry, frustrated, and short-tempered when you can choose joy and peace?

You may have read Barb’s recent post about depression and illness. If emotions are feelings experienced in our mind and soul, then we need to approach them in two ways: mind and soul. I like to think of emotions in this way, as it makes them a little more understandable. My mind can be trained (like you trained your mind to read or drive a car) to react differently to emotions, and I can call on spiritual help for my soul. Depression should never be a shameful thing to admit, and help is always available. Let’s not pretend that emotions and depression are the same, or that we can just “snap out of it”. Sometimes we get so low or chemically imbalanced that we need a doctor or mental health professional to help dig us out of the hole.
Essential oils and emotions: fairy story or historically intriguing connection? Essential oils aren’t magical, and they won’t make your problems disappear. However, they are one of several tools you might use. The Bible first mentions essential oils in Genesis (they are used throughout the Bible), and the Persians, Egyptians, and Romans also used them. Their benefits have been utilized for thousands of years. The concept that essential oils and emotions are linked isn’t new.
When I’m feeling stressed or angry, I like to bring out my favorite roll-on, single, or blend of Young Living essential oils. I start by putting a drop or two in my hands. Then, I inhale the aroma three times, and use this time to pause and pray for wisdom, self-control, or solace thus pinpointing the intention I have behind using the oil. Finally, I rub the oil either on the bottoms of my feet or on my neck and chest.
Occasionally, I wear jewelry that doubles as a passive diffuser. This jewelry is often a bracelet or necklace that I can drop oil on and inhale as I go about my day. My favorite way to use these oils is to place a few drops in a diffuser, so my whole house smells great and everyone in the family benefits. Below is a list of some great Young Living essential oils to try if you are looking for ideas.
Young Living Single Essential Oils:
Orange, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, Lavender
Young Living Essential Oil Blends:
Acceptance, Abundance, Joy, Peace and Calming, Stress Away, Awaken, Common Sense, Dream Catcher, Forgiveness, Harmony
Young Living Essential Oil Roll-ons:
Stress Away, Tranquil, Rutavala
Orange essential oil can bring feelings of inspiration and calming. Peppermint essential oil can invite feelings of peace. Ylang ylang essential oil has a romantic and relaxing sweet floral scent. Part of being emotionally healthy is realizing what emotions you are experiencing and what you want to do about them! I’ve got three small girls that I homeschool. I need a calming, relaxing, peaceful fragrance like patchouli essential oil to get through our day. When traffic makes me angry and aggressive…I pull out that bag of essential oils.
Taking a bath with those bath salts we made in {Part 1} and {Part 2} of the bath salt tutorial is another idea. Diffuse some Young Living essential oils, and enjoy some quiet time. Young Living has some great diffusers. The Desert Mist diffuser is brand new, and very powerful. I love all the different settings (like a candle flicker mode)!
Here are some other emotional wellness tools that don’t use essential oils:
Find a group you enjoy attending. I attend a weekly lady’s Bible study. In the past, I’ve really enjoyed group exercise classes and made many friends while exercising. My local library has a long list of groups that meet in the building! I was amazed to see that a quilting group even meets there. Knowing I would be missed if I stayed home, these activities can add purpose and social interaction.
Read a book! I have a bookcase full of great reads that I rotate through. Trips to the used book store and the library are my favorites.
Volunteering has often helped me get my mind off of my own troubles. Soup kitchens, local veterans groups, hospitals, women’s shelters, pregnancy centers, and nursing homes almost always need help.
Spiritual growth and quiet time. The more time I spend praying, studying the Bible, and seeking out answers, the less time I spend consumed with uncontrollable emotions. I really enjoyed reading The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg. My copy has seen a lot of love.
If you are experiencing difficult emotions or depression, the most important thing to do is to reach out for the help that you need.
