Can one have too many cutting boards?
I think not.
I grew up on a farm and my mama, to this day,
still has many of the same cutting boards she used
when I was a little girl.
You could pull out any number of her boards, and she
would be able to immediately tell you what she
used each cutting board for.
Meats, Veggies, Seafood, Pork…
Come to think of it, maybe this is why I love
cutting boards so much.
Because my own sweet Mama did.
So, I decided to give my hand at making my own,
and now….
I may just be obsessed. Plus, I know what
everyone is getting for Christmas now.
😀
How to Make Your Own DIY
Cutting Board
I am part of a group of lovely ladies
participating today in a two-day
#LowesDIYDays Challenge.
I will share the links and projects to all the other
bloggers who are participating below.

Making this DIY Cutting Board could not be easier.
You can even make this if you are power tool challenged
or you do not even have any tools.
The friendly staff at Lowe’s will cut the boards for you.
I started with these shelving boards.
They’re not your average board, because they appear
almost “chopping block” in style. I bought one
long board for $15, but it allowed me
to make two cutting boards.
I cut (2) 16″ x 16″ wide pieces.
They need to be exact as exact as possible.
Once cut, I decided upon the board which was
a) the prettiest
b) was the smoothest.
I gave this side a good sanding with a 180 grit
sanding block.
Because I was making a cutting board with feet, I did
not worry about sanding the underside board.
I wanted my cutting board to be thicker than one
single width of board allotted,
so we used some wood glue to secure two
16″x16″ pieces together.
A few *heavy bricks on top of a towel helped push
the two pieces together firmly.
*(Bricks because we could not find our clamps)
😀
Once the glue was dry, and that didn’t take very long,
we had a double-thickness cutting board.
I used my hand sander to make sure we had a
smooth and even outer edge.
Next, we cut four bun feet from a piece of large
dowel and gave these a good sanding, too.
More wood glue held the feet in place.
Then, I needed to seal the board.
I used several coats of this product…
Make sure you follow all manufacturer’s directions.
This was super easy to apply and dried really fast
between coats, too.
*Always us a food safe prooduct!
I had every intention of personalizing this cutting board
in some way, or at least adding a cute design such
as a fleur-de-lis, etc.
But, the same person who snuck in the tool shed
and took our clamps must have also needed my
wood-burning tool.
It was nowhere to be found.
Ix-Nay the wood-burned design.
:-/
In the end, I decided I rather liked it plain and simple…
I love how the Butcher Block Sealer brought out
the woodgrain, and especially all of the wood knots.
The small bun feet makes it the perfect height, too.
Just perfect for me to chop up some of our heirloom
cherry tomatoes which are growing like crazy in
the garden right now…
Next week, I will share an easy
Heirloom Tomato and Feta Salsa Recipe.
That is, if I can stop popping these little beauties
right into my mouth long enough to make the recipe.
Oh and to my family who is reading this…
(at least I sure hope at least one of you are)
– Merry Christmas.
This is what everyone is getting from us.
😀
This is a 2-Day Event. Please make sure you come
back and see all the posts shared on Friday, also.

Barb,
View CommentWhat a fabulous idea. I never even thought of Lowe’s cutting the wood for me to make my own cutting board.
Love this.
Pinned 🙂

Yep, they will cut them. We have our own saw but sometimes I get them to cut things for me because I am lazy and its easier. 🙂 I enjoyed having this Blog Hop with you. xxoo, Barb

Love it, Barb! I made a bread board once, but didn’t know about the Watco product, and use it just for display! Now, I’m going to go back to Lowe’s, get a can of that Watco, and seal that bread board so I can use it!! Thanks for the tip!

How has this cutting board held up? It looks like you used pine which is a softer wood and most people are using hardwoods to make cutting boards.
I have a lot of pine scraps that I could use to make cutting boards, but I am just curious if your cutting board stayed in good shape after use. If anyone can comment on the durability that would be great. I am not sure if this finish helps as well or if it is just an oil.
Thanks!
