Eat Your Greens:
Green Pea-Sesame Hummus
Here’s the scoop. I got tired of taking pics of “griege” food.
A few weeks ago, I featured one of
my family’s favorite breakfast foods.
Homemade Sausage Gravy and Biscuits.
The title of my post was
“Homemade Sausage Gravy: It Ain’t Purty!”
When I am planning a recipe and a blog post, the first thing that
comes to mind is “this is one of my fave recipes and I want
to share it with everyone.”
In the future, I think it needs to be…. “this is one of my fave
recipes and I want to share it with everyone and hope it
photographs well.”
So this week….
Color, Baby!
But, I promise there is a ton of flavor, too.
My grandson said it looks like his sister’s baby food, but he said it
was good. So, there you go. Straight from a 7-year old food critic.
But, hold on tight, folks. This recipe is a tough one.
As in “lock the door, grab the apron, put your hair up in a pony –
and prepare to cook” tough.
(total exaggeration!)
Here are the ingredients…
(minus the tahini paste which was laying by the sink)
Grab a pad and pencil, because here comes the “cooking” part…
Blanching frozen peas.
It’s like Julia Child epic cooking, huh?
3 minutes in boiling water with a tablespoon of butter and a pinch of salt.
Drain, then pour cooked peas in a food processor…
Add all the other ingredients, give it a whirly-whirl and let
the magic begin. Creamy green peas, garlic, sesame flavor,
cilantro, olive oil… it all comes together and creates an
amazing healthy and flavorful snack.
I served it with Garlic Pita Chips, but it’s also good when served
with veggies.
- (1) Bag Frozen Peas
- (2) Tablespoons finely chopped cilantro or parsley
- (1/4) Cup Olive Oil
- (1) Tablespoon Sesame Oil
- (1) Tablespoon Tahini Paste
- (1) Tablespoon minced garlic
- (1/2) teaspoon onion powder
- (1/2) Lemon, freshly squeezed juice
- (2) Tablespoons Butter
- salt
- pepper
- Bring 4 cups water, 2 Tablespoons butter, and a pinch of salt to a rolling boil in a medium saucepan. Add frozen peas. Cover with lid and cook for 3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and drain peas.
- Add peas to food processor with remaining ingredients, accept salt and pepper.
- Process on high for about 30 seconds.
- Taste. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add more olive oil if mixture is too thick.
- Pulse 3-4 times more. Chill for 10-15 mins in the fridge.
Next month, I will flip through my handy-dandy recipe card file
and see if I can find something between Greige and Baby Food Green.
Promise.
If you get a chance, check out my post from yesterday…
Crispy, Iron-Skillet Potatoes and Onions
There’s also a recipe for a fab Homemade {fructose free} Ketchup.
In case you’re interested. 🙂
I will warn you… I am in Full Fall mode right now. I have pumpkin on the brain.
I am making another batch of my Crockpot Pumpkin-Butter I made last year. I am going to
double the batch this year because it makes such great gifts for family and friends, and
especially teachers.
Or, how about my Gluten Free Apple-Banana-Walnut Bread.
My babies heart these!
See you tomorrow night for Home{work} Wednesday!
Starts at 8pm!

I love hummus, but have never considered making it from anything but chickpeas. I will definitely have to give this a try! Thanks for sharing! =)
