Sprummer!
You know that time of year when it’s still Spring, but it’s also after Easter. It’s time to put the bunnies away – yet it isn’t quite Summer. It’s Sprummer. I love this time of year. The days are warmer yet the nights are cooler, perfect for sitting on the front porch feeling the cool evening air. I also love that I can decorate my house and not really have to change it until the pumpkins come out. Maybe just add a Summer accent or two, in my case a few seashells. This year, I went a whole new direction on our Dining Room fireplace. Light and airy and dressed in it’s Sprummer best. I am sharing this Easy DIY Summer Wreath Tutorial with you today.

I don’t know about you, but I love a story that has a happy beginning and a happy ending, too. This Wreath-making story starts at Hobby Lobby, where this silk flower loving gal found out that all of the stems were 60% off.
That’s right. SIXTY PERCENT! I don’t think I have ever seen that awesome of a sale on their silk florals. I knew it was time for Mrs. Everyday Home to load up on a few silk stems I had been eyeing for some time. Peonies.
I grabbed pink and white peonies, blush peonies and white peonies. I also grabbed a few stems of Queen Anne’s Lace, some Dusty Miller stems and some greenery.
Now, have you ever seen this funny meme floating around on Facebook or Pinterest?
Ironically, most of the time this is true. But, usually in the case of a wreath, if they are of any quality at all, they are expensive. Then, what is the wreath is too small than what I you want or need? I was tickled pink – or should I say peony pink – that I could buy all of the components of this wreath for about $40. Let me show you just how easy it is to make.
STEP 1: The Wreath Base
You can choose any size or shape of wreath you want. You could also choose an entirely different form altogether. I like grapevine wreaths because they are easy to work with – flowers pop right in. And this oval shape worked well on my mantle.
STEP TWO: CREATING A BEGINNING LAYER OF GREENERY
Now you’re gonna have to bare with me and allow me some creative leeway here, because these first few steps will look pretty darn awful until you see the final result. You’re just gonna have to trust me. 😀
I took two small fern-type bushes and cut them apart into two sections. Then, I added the four sections to the wreath as seen above, just plopped them right on in under the twigs.
STEP THREE: ADDING FIRST LAYER OF FLORALS
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking I have NO clue what I am doing and all I am creating is a big MESS. Nope.
Here is a tip: no matter what shape or size of wreath you are creating, add your initial larger blooms at 2pm, 4pm, 8pm and 10pm. If you place them at 3:10pm or 10:12pm, don’t sweat the minutes. Just get them close.
STEP FOUR: ADDING SECOND LAYER OF FLORAL STEMS
Now you just start adding additional stems in between. It’s really very easy. But, this doesn’t look good at all does it. The blossoms appear to completely overwhelm the wreath base. That’s why the next step is so important.
STEP FIVE: ADDING GREEN FILLER
Remember that fern bush I told you about in Step One? Well, I purchased two more and cut them all up into smaller stems. Then, I just started tucking the cut pieces here and there until my wreath starting filling out and the silk peony blooms didn’t look so lonely any longer.
STEP SIX: (OPTIONAL) ADDING THE FINISHING FILLER
Finally, I added what I call the accent pieces. It’s an optional step as you can stop with just the greenery filler above. I basically refer to it as the finishing filler. I purchased several stems of silk Queen Anne’s Lace and a silvery Dusty Miller – stems and florals and colors that coordinated well with the peonies. Again, I cut the larger stems into smaller pieces and worked them in here and there. When I was happy with the tucking and poking process (that is official wreath-making lingo you know) – I added a black and white striped bow and hanger.
You don’t need to add any ribbon accents at all, but I adored this black and white striped design the moment I saw it. I made this specifically for my mantel, but this post is just a tease. I will show you my full mantel in a few days.
See how the Queen Ann’s Lace and the Dusty Miller completed the whole wreath? You could use any type of smaller floral as filler. Even another flower, but I chose to use only peonies for this specific look. So what do you think?
Is this a project you think you can tackle now? It doesn’t have to be peonies and it doesn’t have to be pink. As you can see above, I will be using some of my pink and white Staffordshire plates on my mantel. How pretty would this same wreath look with blue silk hydrangeas? Your choices are limitless. I hope this tutorial has helped so you can create your own DIY Summer Wreath.

Beautiful and easy. That’s a lot of seeds to plant, but I know they will be gorgeous when they mature!

This peonies wreath is lovely.
View CommentYou asked how we liked your shift to more person-related posts and fewer DIY and cooking posts. I think I do like it, with a little hesitancy. I have lots of sources for recipes and DIY, especially Hometalk.com. I don’t have as many sources for mature, level-headed, even funny female blogs that encourage me and challenge me. You are nowhere near my age of 68, but you seem like the kind of woman my daughters-in-law are–strong, life-loving, godly, women, mothers, and wives. I’ll be reading, and looking for connections, and I’m almost positive I’ll find them.
