Happy Birthday America!
Growing up, I always assumed every Country celebrated July 4th. I mean, why
wouldn’t everyone around the world want to celebrate a birthday? Cookouts,
and time with family at the river, and sparklers and fireworks. My Mama
always had a pretty Patriotic Cake or pie, and we got to stay up extra late
to see the fireworks show. It was a spectacular time to be a child!
It wasn’t until High School in history class when the true meaning of July 4th
came to light. It wasn’t just a time for grilling hotdogs and going to the beach.
It meant so much more than that.
I never knew that America is the only country with a known birthday. One which
is recognized around the world. And while the true meaning has a deeper
patriotic meaning, in some ways – the innocence of sparklers and spending time
with family friends is, in fact, what our Founding Fathers longed for and strove
for – “the pursuit of happiness.”
“That these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states;
that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British crown; and that all political
connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to
be, totally dissolved.” – Richard Henry Lee, signer (1732-1794)
As a military family, two things always comes to mind. That we are a free
Nation because of the many sacrifices and forfeitures that so many surrendered
in the name of freedom. From the Minute Men in the American Revolutionary
War, to the Founding Fathers who spelled out how this great Nation should be
governed, to the Heros and families throughout the decades who have fought in
the name of sovereignty and independence.
So enjoy the hotdogs. Eat an extra one or three. Cherish the time
with your family and enjoy the day off. Just please offer a prayer
of remembrance and thanks for all that have gone before us…
Because Freedom is not Free. And a tremendous price has been paid by
many Americans. Happy Birthday, America. I am so honored and
blessed to call you HOME.
