Summer.
It occurred to me that Summer is about halfway over.
Boo, hiss, sniff-sniff.
Our home is almost back in order after having our wood floors refinished.
I am a little late with my Summer decorating. So, I thought I would
grab a glue gun, a stray terra cotta pot – and whip up something using an
item quintessential to Summer – shells.
DIY SHELL COVERED TERRA COTTA POT
We live within minutes to three major beaches. So baskets and bowls of
shells are generally in abundance at The Everyday Home. I have a few
more projects I will be completing this Summer using shells, because my
sweet daughter-in-law wants their new home to have a Coastal theme.
I will just pass these projects along to her.
{ Start with an ordinary clay pot. }
This DIY could not have been easier.
I made this up in minutes while I was multi-tasking on four other projects.
Laundry. (always laundry!) Cooking dinner. (The Babies wanted Grammy’s
Homemade Tenders.) Supervising Miss C’s Coloring. (on a white table!)
and texting with my sister about my Mama. (please pray for her as she had a
mini stroke this past weekend.) 🙁
{ my bowl of collected sun bleached shells }
I already had both the pot and the shells.
If you don’t have any extra shells lying around, I am sharing my supply
list below.
I plan on making a few of these to use as a centerpiece on our back
deck table. I knew the pot needed a basic basecoat of paint to help
cover the terra cotta color underneath the shells. So, I decided to
use this outdoor “Patio Paint” by DecoArt.
I only added one coat of paint, and painted the inside edge about 2″ down.
I started gluing shells along the bottom edge, making sure not to go too
low so that the pot would not sit level.
I varied the size of the shells, and worked all the way around.
I used smaller and longer/narrower shells as “filler.”
Once I had all the shells glued firmly in place, and had filled in most of
the larger, open spaces with smaller shells… I ended up with this.
What do I love to pair with seashells?
Ferns.
(You could also use succulents which would be beautiful, as well.)
I love the contrast of the green fern with the all-white shells.
I had one small starfish leftover from another project (these I have
to purchase) so I attached it to the front as an accent. That was the
perfect touch.
I plan on making one more of these shell covered terra cotta pots to go
on each side of a rope covered candleholder which I will share soon. I
hope to have our back deck all “decked” out soon. 🙂
Don’t have a terra cotta pot? You could use any type of container.
How about an old coffee can or any plastic container.
Simply give it a good coat of paint, OR – glue on a layer of white sand
similar to these Sand Covered Pots.

What a beautiful shell-covered terra cotta pot! It’s beautiful just by itself but even prettier with the fern! Well done! Blessings, Janet

Love, love your shell covered pot, so natural and pretty looking, great project. The shells you used are so clean and pretty.
View CommentThanks for great idea., I have lots of plastic butter containers and lots of succulents so can get busy. Just need to get some Patio Paint for containers. Or maybe some spray paint for plastic. Maybe if they turn out cute could give for some summer, just cause gifts.
Have been on a non creating lull for too long so want to get busy. Know from previous experience once I get started ideas and creativity keep on cranking into more and more. Love that having terra cotta pots isn’t a must have, we live on our SS so budget is small.
Have great rest of week and weekend I subscribed to your blog

JaneEllen – yes! Recycling plastic butter containers is PERFECT! I couldn’t decide whether or not to use ferns or succulents, both would be stunning. Have fun crafting!! Please visit me again soon at The Everyday Home. ~Barb

I love this idea. And I also have a lot of shells that have been collected from local beaches so this is another project on the to-do list. So cute.

Hi Paege – would you believe its faux? I got it at Michael’s and only bought it because my cats eat live plants and I have to be very careful. But I thought this one looked super real. 🙂 Thanks for your sweet words and for stopping by. Hope your project turns out well. ~ Barb
