Red, White and Blue.
American colors that brings out your patriotic spirit.
I also think of Summertime when I see Red, White and Blue.
Flag Day, July 4th, Memorial Day.
Great American holidays where we can roll out the Stars and Stripes
and show our support for our beloved Country.
I have a few patriotic-style wreaths, but wanted something a bit
more unusual. I also wanted a wreath that would take me through
the Summer months. This square boxwood wreath is perfect!
DIY Patriotic Boxwood Wreath
Before I share this easy wreath project, I wanted to let you know I am joining
a group of amazing bloggers today for our monthly Celebrations of Home.
I am so excited to join this month’s theme: Patriotic.
Please make sure you follow to the end and visit each of these great blogs
and projects.

This wreath project could not be easier.
The hardest part was waiting for the boxwood garlands to arrive once
they had been ordered. 🙂 Yep. that’s my secret to this super easy wreath
project. Garlands.
I have used these boxwood garlands before. HERE and HERE. They are
inexpensive and even though they may not look realistic in garland form,
once you place them “en masse” they look very lifelike.
I order the garlands from HERE.
Making the Wreath Form:
I knew I needed a lighter base because the garlands alone would
be heavy. Plus this was a large wreath. So, I relied on my handy-dandy
Balsa wood again. Remember I used Balsa Wood for my DIY Drawer
Organizer? Balsa wood is super lightweight, and the best part about it
is that it doesn’t require power tools. In fact, all you need is a utility knife
or heavy duty exacto blade. I get my Balsa wood at Michael’s.
Step 1: Decide how large you want your wreath to be. I wanted mine to
be large enough to fill in the center glass of our front door.
{image}
Step 2: Using your measurements, cut (2) shorter pieces for the top
and bottom of the form, and (2) pieces for the sides.
Step 3: Balsa is so lightweight, I actually used my hot glue gun to
attach all the pieces together to create the oblong shape.
*note: you could also create a basic square shape.
Making the Wreath:
Once you have the form made, you will need to either paint it green or
cover it in moss. That is so the wood does not show thru the boxwood.
I had moss on hand so that is what I used.
Step 1: Glue moss on top of form completely covering it.
(*it’s ok if there are a few gaps it doesn’t have to be perfect.)
Step 2: Wrap the form with the boxwood garland.
(* used five garlands for the size wreath I needed.)
Step 3: Fluff the garland until you get the look you want.
(my apologies I have no images from these steps, I took lots of images
during the process, but guess what? I didn’t have a memory card in.

Adding the Red, White & Blue…
I found some patriotic ribbon and small flags at Michael’s.
I wanted this wreath to be about the boxwood, but have a strong
Americana style. I love this ribbon, don’t you?

Here is a similar ribbon which would coordinate well together also, if you’re interested:

I used three types of ribbon.
I will create a post soon on how to make a 3-ribbon bow, I promise. 😀
(I know I promised during the holidays)
Then, I added some red geraniums around the bow. I don’t know why
but when I think of Summer and Americana I also think of
sunflowers.
I am still working on my Summer porch. Oh, let’s be honest with
each other here – this is the first project I have completed for my
Summer porch. LOL

I love the Americana colors and pops of green next to our
red-painted front door. This wreath gives me the perfect
starting point and I can’t wait to finish the rest of this space.
And no Patriotic Wreath would be complete without some little
flags, right?
I added some vintage child’s chairs, a large pot of
red geraniums and yellow gerberas and some black lanterns.

In fact I love it so much, I decided the theme for this year’s
Summer Porch will be “All American Pride.” I have several
projects in the work and can’t wait to reveal our Summer Front
Porch soon.
Thank you for letting me share my Easy Patriotic Wreath.

Barb, this wreath is the prettiest patriotic one I’ve ever seen! Great job. I worked on my wreath this past weekend, but after seeing yours, I may do a wreath like yours instead.
