5 Homemade and Creative Ways to Clean a Toilet
Face it – no one likes to clean a toilet. But what I hate worse than the idea of actually cleaning the toilet is having to use those harsh chemicals to do the job. They burn your eyes and put harmful fumes into the air which your family breaths. Here are 5 homemade solutions to cleaning your toilet.
Are you asking yourself right now…is it necessary to bring “creativity” into the picture when cleaning your toilet? Well, no not really when cleaning a toilet is an everyday occurrence. It’s also a much needed everyday occurrence when you have two grandson’s who have “issues” hitting the water – if you know what I mean.
I really, really hate those over-the-counter toilet bowl cleaners. They burn my eyes and I hate the fact that it leaves your bathroom smelling all chemical-y. Instead, I thought it would be fun to share some “creative”alternatives to those smelly store-bought options.

No. 1: Efferdent
Yes! Those same tablets used to clean dentures work in the toilet, also. If you think about it, they’re both porcelain. Just a few tablets a few times a week and a quick schwish-schwish with a brush and your toilet will be – well, smiling. 😀

No. 2: Coca Cola
I know. It sounds completely nonsensical doesn’t it? The chemical make-up of this soda consists of an acidic composition. This same acidity actually works in getting rid of stubborn stains. You need to let it sit for a little while and follow-up with a good cleaning, but it does work. No ice needed.

No. 3: White Vinegar
I have a myriad of tools and cleaners and all sorts of odds ‘n ends in our Construction Trailer which we haul from house to house. One of the items I use and replenish the most is plain, white vinegar. This is a wonder cleaner, and the best part of all – it’s a green product and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals. I make a bottle with vinegar and baking soda and generally, this mixture gets out even the toughest of stains. By the way, these are my fave spray bottles. I order them thru Amazon. They seem to last three-four times longer than Dollar Store versions.

You can order them *HERE and you get (3) 24-oz bottles
The mixture I use is:
- 1-2/3 cups baking soda
- 1/2 cup Castile Liquid Soap
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons white vinegar

No. 4: Borax
Borax is a Laundry Booster which has been around since the creation of dirt. It’s one of those products your Mama used and your Grandmama used, too. Growing up on a farm, I cannot recollect not seeing boxes of Borax around.
Even today, I use this to make our Homemade Detergent. *(coming soon)
Here’s a great Toilet Cleaning Recipe using Borax:
- 1 3/4 Cups Boiling Water
- 2 heaping Tablespoons Borax
- 1/4 Cup Liquid Castille Soap
- 20 drops *Tea Tree Oil
- I LOVE this Lavender scented version of Castile Soap.
Simply add the borax into the boiling water to dissolve. Let water cool slightly, then pour into a spray container. Add the remaining ingredients and shake well. I have found something to be helpful in my home,if I keep this mixture handy and in a pretty bottle on the back of the toilet – I tend to give it a little squirt-squirt more often. I use this pretty glass spray bottle and these cute Chalkboard labels.
These are the same *Chalkboard Labels I use for our

No. 5: Homemade Fizzy Toilet Bombs
These fizzy bombs are so easy to make, and if you enjoy using Essential Oils, the combinations and scents you create are endless.
I love this recipe and tutorial by Jessica at Mom4Real. I love how she used a plastic ice-cube tray to form these. You could even use this heart-shaped tray to prove you are giving your toilet some “love.” 😀
So there you go.
If cleaning the toilet can be classified as creative, here are five ways. I love that these ideas use less chemicals and are easy on the budget, too. So don’t ever let anyone tell you that cleaning a toilet can’t be fun.
They never used heart-shaped fizzy bombs did they?
