Happy Flag Day, America!
I love America with every breath of my being.
I often wonder if I bleed red, white and blue!
😀
I try to live each day being appreciative and feeling
blessed to live in such a great Country.
So, when Flag Day and Independence Day rolls around –
let’s just say I get a little giddy and love to show my patriotic spirit.
I wanted to make a banner for our front fencing.
So I whipped up this No-Sew Americana
Burlap & Bandana Banner.
I am also taking part in the monthly
No-Sew Showcase: July 4th Edition with some amazing
other lady Bloggers. I can’t wait to share with you their projects, too.

talented bloggers.
Let’s get started…
I started out with some basic $1 Bandanas from
the Dollar Store.
I purchased 4 of each color. I also purchased two packages of these
pre-cut burlap pennants from Hobby Lobby, but you could easily
cut out your own from plain burlap.
First, I folded down about a 1/2″ seam across the top of each burlap
pennant. There were two reasons for this… it allowed me a marker for
where I would place the top of my letter stencil, and the second reason will
be explained further down.
Now, let’s get to stenciling.
I used a basic font stencil. Nothing too fancy.
I also used only red for the lettering, even though I would alternate the
red and blue bandanas. There are not rules – you can spell out any saying
and use any colors you wish.
(I will be making one of these in teal and coral for my niece’s 18th Birthday party)
Once you have all your pennants stenciled…it’s time to attach
them to the bandana pennants.
Using the burlap pennant as a template, I cut out the bandanas
so they were about 1 1/2″ longer on both sides.
I did some basic math to figure out how long I would need to cut
lengths of jute to assemble all of the burlap and bandana pennants
to form my banner. You will also need about 2″ of space between
each pennant to tie on the ribbon and fabric strips, plus an extra 5-6″
on each end.
I started in the center of the jute lengths, and added the center letter.
Fold the cut bandana pennant over the jute, and glue in place.
Next, add the stenciled letter pennants.
This is what the backside looks like…
And this is what the front looks like.
Make sure you clip off all of the “ears” on the back of
the bandana pennants.
Now the fun starts…add strips of bandana fabric and assorted
patriotic-style ribbons.
I started out with the bandana fabric strips…
Then I simply kept filling in with lots of and lots of ribbons,
and I even added some short pieces of jute, too.
Until it was nice and thick…
I filled in all the spaces between each letter.
And that is all!
No sewing, simple and easy –
and you can make one in about an hour or less.
It helps if you have a sweet Baby Girl to model her
Flag shirt for you.
😀
I love how the banner looks on the fence…
I may move it to the back patio for our July 4th Celebration…
but I also love how it greets guests as they come up the walkway.
I added reverse stenciled blue-heart pennants on each end.
I think the red and blue bandanas look completely patriotic.
I had debated using a flag-style fabric, but glad I chose to go with
these instead.
A large fern is filled with flag pinwheels, also from
The Dollar Store.
And a hand-painted checkered pot with geraniums is
all the “decoration” this banner needs.
I can’t think of a better way to say…
“I Heart America!”
🙂
