“I’m gonna go throw together a dump cake for dinner.”
Famous words from my Mama.
Lordy, I know it sounded awful as a little girl.
A “Dump Cake” did not sound appetizing at all.
All I knew is that after supper, when all the dishes and leftovers
had been put away – and mama came out with a tray of cake-filled
plates and glasses of cold milk – I was in Dessert Heaven.
I am sharing my
Black Forest Dump Cake as part of
The Great Dollar Store Challenge.

The challenge for this month was to create a fabulous dessert using at least
50% of your dessert ingredients from The Dollar Store.
(Edit: Please note, I decided NOT to use the pudding mix shown above in this picture)
My Dollar Store ingredients included everything but the butter
and the pudding mix.
My hubby had the same reaction to the name of the dessert as
I had as a child. To quote: “anything with the word dump
does not sound very good.”
But it’s literally a “dump and bake dessert.”
You simply “dump” a can of cherry pie filling into a
buttered casserole dish.
This is followed by dumping a jar of maraschino cherries on top,
to include the juice.
(full recipe will be below)
Next, dump out a package of chocolate cake mix right over
the cherries. Do not stir!
You’re almost done. Just a few more steps…or “dumps.”
Cut butter into pats and spread all over the dry cake mix.
It helps when you have two little helpers who happen to be
(If you saw their toy area you would agree.)
Grammy’s Little Gooberheads.
Finally – I added an ingredient that wasn’t called for…
A generous handful (or two) of chocolate chips.
‘Cause Grammy says…
“If chocolate is good, a lot of chocolate is better!”
It’s hard to believe that a little bit of dumping using some basic
pantry ingredients, can produce such a hugely delicious cake…
The cake mix creates this crispy-like crust on top with a moist
cake below. The fruit is bubbly and juicy.
There really is only one perfect word to describe this dessert.
This is a slight variation of a standard “Dump Cake” as they are
usually made with a plain vanilla cake mix and fruit such as
fresh peaches or even fruit cocktail.
But, c’mon cherries and chocolate?
And – least you think I forgot… there was milk, too.
In quilted jam jars with stripey straws.
- 1 (21 ounce) can Cherry Pie Filling
- 1 (16.5 ounce) jar pitted maraschino cherries
- 1 Chocolate Cake Mix
- 3/4 Cups butter, cut into pats
- 1 Cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare a glass casserole dish with butter or baking spray. (I used a 10x10.) Dump the cherry pie filling into the dish. Add the maraschino cherries including the juice. Give a little stir to mix the cherries and juice. Dump the cake mix evenly over the cherry mix. *DO NOT STIR!* Finally, add the pats of butter over the cake mix and sprinkle with the chocolate chips on top. Bake 45 mins until bubbly.
- This same recipe can be used with some variations. Substitute any flavor cake mix and any type of fruit to create your own flavor of cake.
I would be ever so grateful if you would pin this
dessert to your favorite Pinterest Boards…
