I am inviting everyone who is reading this to stop for a second, take a deep breath – and let’s all share a collective sigh. It’s almost Friday. 🙂
I don’t know about you but it has been quite the week thus far, and I am looking forward to the weekend.
That said….it also means its time for
Yay or Nay Thursday. Yay. 🙂
This week, I am going to share my Family Room as part of the Yay or Nay topic. I am very anxious to hear your replies and comments.
Are you ready for the topic?
Are you biting your nails and screaming at me “okay enough already with the suspense – it is killing me?”
Ok…this week’s topic is Recliners.
I know. You’re squirming, aren’t you? 🙂
Are images of super, puffy purple chenille chairs the size of small foreign cars now haunting you?
Are you remembering some heated discussions with your hubby about the bad effects said chairs would have on your painfully thought-out and designed spaces?
If so, I have a confession to make before you make your Yay or Nay voice known to all.
I need to let you know that me and The Hubbs are owners of not one, but TWO recliners in our Family Room.
Don’t hate. 🙂
When I was designing this room, I was pretty much given leeway to do about anything I wanted.
Any color. Any room layout. Any furniture purchase.
I was in design heaven.
Well, almost. When you make pacts with hubbies sometimes there are other ways you have to “pay.”
Oh, get your minds out the gutters, ladies. Not that kind of pay. 😉
In return for me having pretty much design carte blanche in this room, I had to agree to one thing.
Or… should I say two.
Recliners. Two recliners.
I agreed – then moved forward with carpet and paint colors and window treatments and accessories and furniture…
I shopped and gathered and primped and staged, until I was as happy as a pig in a mud hole.
I designed the English Pub bar…and purchased a beautiful suede sofa.
Once I had the room just right…I knew it was time to “pay the piper.”
(Blasted Piper!) Hubbs—->
.
So, off we went one afternoon, with one of us in considerable pout mode. (and it wasn’t the tall, dark and handsome one.)
In the end, after looking at a mountain of fabric samples and test-driving a number of chairs at the
Lazy-Boy showroom, we compromised on these two recliners which were delivered six weeks later.
While I won’t say I love them, I will admit they have come in pretty handy for rocking babies, sleeping upright after surgery, and late afternoon naps.
And the plaid makes them semi-tolerable.
But, please don’t ever let The Hubbs know I said that. 😉
So now it’s your turn.
Are you 100% anti-recliner or have you also “compromised” with “The Piper?”
I can’t wait to hear all of your comments.

I love my very own lazy-boy recliner – It is about 15 years old, has been recovered once, is small in size. Unfortunately, lazy-boy doesn’t make it anymore. You can’t even tell it is a recliner. Why do they always get rid of a good thing? My husband’s lazy-boy is pretty ugly. We hide ours in the bedroom with a large TV and use them everyday – nothing more comfortable when this old body is aching.

Recliners are a MUST…and that’s MY rule! I may not be stylish, but my butt is comfortable. HAHA!

I don’t really care for them, Barb, but I have “paid the piper” myself. : ) I have to say we don’t have one now, since we moved {and downsized}. Our last one was actually a recliner/rocker loveseat in our great room, which is where we had our television in our old house. I know that they make some now that you would never know are recliners. I would probably push toward one of those if the subject came up again, but I think the bigger ones are probably more comfortable and nap worthy.

I love yours and I definitely want one for me and the hubs. I love mine, just can’t do without one. There are some really nice looking ones now, and they don’t all look like a small car, neither are they so big you can’t work around them. I have had one forever and I would not be a happy camper if I didn’t have one. So, I say yea. Love, love, love them. Hugs, Marty

I am not a big fan of recliners but I sure like yours. We had one of those “chair and a half” deals with a huge ottoman. We moved it to our second house when we got new furniture and I sure miss it! Lots of kids and dogs fit in that thing! I might have to find another one!

Oh, yes when we were buying new furniture for the great room that I talked my other half into he threw in the condition that he wanted a recliner. I said noooooooooo, but then knew he deserved something for him, too and we got one that doesn’t look to overly like one and it is a nice leather.

Absolutely yay.

There comes a time in life when comfort is more important than “looks”. Wouldn’t give up our two recliners for anything. Our home is lived in and loved.

Well, we are the proud owners of three–yes three–recliners. None of them looks like a recliner–my husband’s is a dark brown leather with nailhead trim and looks like and over stuffed wing chair. And comfy. In our TV room we have two matching recliners. They also look like wingback chairs, a paisley inspired fabric with hailhead trim. I think the reason we like them so much is the comfort foremost–but since they are not the overly fluffy style with the front leg support going to the floor–they are keepers…

Nay to marshmallow looking recliners Yay to beautiful patterned ones like yours!!

I would totally have a recliner… Your family room is very cozy and inviting. I’d be napping in the recliner next to you.

We have a leather wing-style recliner in our family room. My husband brought it to the marriage. It’s never been my style, but I must admit that I sit in it every evening — and usually fall asleep in it.
So, I am anti-recliner when it comes to design, but pro-recliner when it comes to lounging and sleeping in front of the TV.
When the recliner dies — and that may be soon, as the leather is getting pretty worn, I won’t be replacing it with another recliner. I’ll probably get a comfy club chair with ottoman and hope the sleeping is as good in it.

Thumbs up for recliners not looking like recliners! Have a great day!

Great post, Barb! If I had recliners as nice as yours, then I’d say “yay!” We had nice La-Z-Boy recliners for a few years, BUT, I slowly transitioned them out … my husband wasn’t happy about that. Oops! Your home is gorgeous, as always!

Hello Barb, I recently discovered your blog and have been lurking. I typically would say nay to recliners, but yours look great! The entire room looks warm and inviting!

Yeah.. ( said in a small voice) I am NOT a fan for the HUGE will ruin all taste in a room recliners. I don;pt care how comfy they are. We did get a couple for the family room a few years ago. But they are small ( we are small people) , and just look like regulare club chairs. Nice with nail heads and a pretty pattern.

I am not a recliner fan but they have come a long way. Some of them don’t even look like a recliner. So I am a bit torn here.

We have two recliners in our great room too. Husband like yours said “that was a must.” Oh well it’s his house too and we’ve made them work. Your pictures are beautiful and your family room is so nice. I love the colors.Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.

Nothing is better than watching tv in a reclining comfortable position. Having said that I don’t own a recliner, but that is because they hadn’t evolved since I last got furniture and now I find them very tolerable. My kids want a reclining sofa, but I don’t think the affordable ones have evolved quite as far as the chairs have yet.

Yes to recliners – I held out for almost 30 years and finally caved because they are darned comfortable – no two ways about it and I love my recliner at the end of a long work day!! They aren’t the most glam chairs but they are so functional that the function outweighs the form!

Nay to recliners from my camp, but we do have one in the den, it does not look like a recliner so it can pass. No bustle backs for this gal, or any big marshmallow seating. I will say this, thought, darn if they are not comfy to sit in!! I do have a chair and an ottoman so it is a faux recliner, lol!!! As recliners go you did a good job camouflaging yours with the plaid fabric!! Designing a home is always a compromising situation, (white fireplace!) lol

If I had my way, it would be nay. But alas, I am married to a man who loves those dadburn things! 🙁 At the moment I’m stuck with one of the worst of the worst – a big ole brown leather poofy monstrosity. At least it has nailheads on it. 😉 I will say yay on the ones that are more up to date looking and that you can’t even tell are recliners though.

I say Yay to the ones that look good. I like yours and a friend of mine has a nice one. We had a beautiful leather one for several years but the dang thing kept breaking…so it’s gone. We all want our home to look nice but in the end it has to be comfortable too. My husband is like yours and he’s so accommodating to my decorating that I give him what he likes some too. :0

I have been thinking about this all afternoon. Your yay or nay questions are always so Hard! My hubs and I were shopping one day and sat in a pair that we could have happily stayed in for the rest of our lives! They were soooooo comfortable, but sooooooo ugly! So, I’m going to have to say Nay….we do have a big ottoman however, where our feet are usually perched!

I’m not completely opposed to recliners as a whole, but I would much prefer the ones that look more like that chair with the ottoman in your picture. I like the recliners incognito, so to speak!

I too have had this love/hate relationship with recliners. I knew my disabled husband needed one and was happy we could get one for him. After he passed away I intended to give it to Goodwill, but before I could make arrangments to have it taken off; I suffered a fall and slammed my shoulder into the pavement. I was unable to sleep comfortably in a bed and had to sleep in that recliner for several days. I now prefer to think of it as a comfortable lived in retro chair. It has pride of place in my living room. Regena in TN.

We compromised and purchased Pottery Barn Leather club chairs with matching ottomans – they are so comfy – so we can still recline with our feet up and the ottomans are handy for extra seating or for using to set trays of food and drinks on when we have company! Your room is beautiful Barb!! Love the English pub bar too!! Thanks for sharing it at Project Inspired!
