Twenty years ago, I married a man
with a truck.
I fell in love first with the man,
then the truck.
I was a farm girl, after all.
Trucks are in my blood.
Little did I know that the man I married,
with the truck, would one day
help me lovingly haul this home.
The most beautiful, old chippy
door I have ever seen.
The dear older man who sold it to me
said it was over 100 years old.
It came from an old home in
South Carolina that was being demolished.
This door was spotted among piles and piles
of old doors, shutters and pieces of wood
that at one time was the bones of a home.
When we walked in, the man asked what
I was looking for, and I simply
replied “an old door.”
He asked if I wanted “something old
looking or Shabby Chic?”
My heart sang.
Here was this sweet ole’ man, whom I
am guessing was at least 85,
saying “Shabby Chic” like it was the
most natural thing ever.
“Shabby Chic, ” I replied.
“Shabby Who?” said my husband with
the truck.
“Come along dear, you’re about to
get a design lesson.”
I did not take a picture of the other side,
but it is painted a beautiful, chippy
antique white. Perfect!
So why did I go on the hunt for a
Chippy Vintage Door with my husband
who drives a truck?
(and wade through quite a bit of dirty
and dusty piles of “Shabby Chic?”)
For this.
Display.
I wanted something to display items for my
new shop “…details!”
It had to be the perfect backdrop for the items
I will be selling. Items like this –
and this…
and even this…
So, the sweet man that I married who
drives a truck received a quick design
lesson on “Shabby Chic” –
(he also learned that “Chic” comes at a price. LOL)
… and we loaded up this beautiful 100-year old
salvaged item and took it home.
I walk by it and rub my hand over it.
I imagine a young Mother painting
this door this beautiful blue while her
little ones are running all around her.
She probably yelled to them
to quit running through the house or
she was gonna tell their daddy when he
got home.
And she glanced out the window to see
if the man she loved was coming up
the dirt drive – in his truck.

Oh goodness I can’t wait to see your shop- this little peek is making me want to see it NOW!!!!
I am doing something a bit new. The owner whom I rent my booth space from bought another building and she offered me free rent space if I would do the merchandising in her store!!!!I really don’t have a clue what I am doing just have sort of an eye and anything would look better then the hodge podge we have now. I have a few of the sections done and it is looking so much better. Boy is it a ton of work though! Know what you’re going through right now!

I love this story even more than I love the door. And boy, do I love the door. Love that your man who drives a truck learned the lesson that chic comes at a price. (But I bet he already knew that!)

It is a perfect colour and just lovely. How sweet how the elderly gentleman described it. I also married my guy with a truck 20 years ago. He doesn’t always ‘get’ why I want to haul things home but does so anyways.
